With the likes of The Budos Band, José González, Nitin Sawhney, Yussef Dayes and Ziggy Marley already heading to WOMADelaide in 2024, event organisers have added another 38 artists to the bill.
The annual celebration of music, arts and dance presented in the glorious Botanic Park/Tainmuntilla in Adelaide (8-11 March), the new arrivals include the enchanting Emel Mathlouthi, Grammy-winning singer Corinne Bailey Rae, the sweet soul sounds of Thee Sacred Souls and vintage funk maestros Cymande. After rising to fame in 2012 with the protest anthem 'Kelmti Horra (My Word is Free)', Tunisian-American singer-songwriter Emel Mathlouthi's music crosses time, countries and continents, travelling between styles: experimental, electronic, North African, Arabic.
Best known for her 2006 single 'Put Your Records On', R&B, neo soul English singer Corinne Bailey Rae recently released 'Black Rainbows', her first album in seven years that was inspired by her experiences with the Stony Island Arts Bank, a Chicago-based archive of Black art and culture.
A soul-R&B band from San Diego, Thee Sacred Souls first arrived in 2019, their music capturing the essence of '60s soul and '70s groove, and collecting famous fans like Gary Clark Jr., Black Pumas and Timbaland.
One of the most sampled bands in the history of hip hop, house and dance music, psychedelic funk pioneers Cymande formed in 1971 fusing funk with soul, reggae, rock, African music, calypso, and jazz that they called 'nyah-rock', releasing three ground-breaking records in the early '70s.
Other notable new additions include Morcheeba, Belgian duo Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupul and AURUS, evoking the Reunion Island's traditional Maloya music with vibrant African and British pop influences.
Two of Ireland's most exciting musicians, singer-songwriter Lisa O'Neill and instrumentalist Cormac Begley, perform both traditional and contemporary songs. MC Yallah & Debmaster command the stage with conscious, poetic, experimental rap.
While renowned Portuguese fado artist Marta Pereira da Costa transports us to another time with her guitar mastery, and Mari Kalkun brings an ethereal combination of folk music and innovative songwriting.
Closer to home, the strong Australian line-up includes ARIA Award-winner, Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Kahu singer-songwriter and performer, Jen Cloher.
From Arnhem Land comes Wildfire Manwurrk, a melting pot of ancient songlines and thrashing rock guitars; and from the east coast, electronic jazz artist Elle Shimada and Ethio-jazz fusion band Black Jesus Experience.
"The world's festival, returning to Botanic Park/ Tainmuntilla is a thrilling and enriching journey of cultural discovery," WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie says, "and we invite audiences to join us to experience the best, the essential – and the surprising – in music, arts and dance from across the nation and around the globe over one glorious weekend."
