Adelaide singer-songwriters Skye Lockwood and Paige Court have teamed together to form new band, Wing Defence.
Named after the netball position, Skye and Paige think the qualities of a wing defender make it the perfect name for their band. “They're always there if you need [them],” Paige explains.
“I think there's a bit of a stigma around the wing defence position that you're maybe not the best player on the team.
"Wing defence is usually the first player that gets dropped, but at the end of the day they're also the ones that are on the edge there to support.
“They are actually there if you need help and we think that's a great motto for us as well, because we're here for each other and want to be here for each other so I guess we're kind of like life wing defenders.”
Both Paige and Skye are well known around Adelaide's local music scene, Paige for her alter-ego MANE and Skye for her valuable work at Music SA.
Established singer-songwriters in their own right, Paige and Skye created Wing Defence as an alternative creative outlet. “Paigey and I met each other [by] just being in the music scene here in Adelaide and we became really good friends,” Skye says.
“I really loved her music through MANE and one day around November last year we were like 'we should start a band'.
"We were out one night and I had written this poem about someone in my life and I read it out to Paige; it was a pretty beat poem until the very last line which said: 'Which position did you play? Wing defence?'.”
Not long after that and the pair were in the studio recording their first single 'Stuck', which was released in March.
They quickly followed up with their latest single 'Listerine' that dropped in May. “I brought this song into the studio and Skye and I workshopped it from there,” Paige explains.
“It tackles the subject of being in a relationship with someone who has a bit of a drinking problem. It comes from a place of care though, it's not in anger; it's about the frustrations of being in a relationship such as that.”
Paige and Skye show-off their skills as Wing Defence when they play Scouted as part of this year's Umbrella: Winter City Sounds. They'll hit the scenestr stage at West Oak Hotel alongside Donnarumma, Neon Tetra and Fair Maiden. “We're looking forward to Scouted, it should be great” Paige says.
“It's a great opportunity for Adelaide artists to showcase their stuff to some industry people and we can't wait. I think our live set will be really great.”
Skye adds: “All the artists on the Scouted line-up are doing great and I feel like Adelaide in terms of the music industry now is really getting up there.
“There are a lot of great acts coming out of South Australia and we're really grateful to be on the bill.”
