Australian ambient and electronic producer, Willaris. K has teamed up with singer-songwriter Gordi (Sophie Payten) to produce 'Indifferent', the first-ever of Willaris.'s tracks to incorporate vocals.
'Indifferent' is a harrowing and dramatic track that marks a sonic transformation for Willaris. and highlights his intrinsic ability to harness emotion through complex musical composition. “I wrote the instrumental as an experiment to see where I could take my music sonically,” Willaris. says.“I wanted to explore it for film, but also explore the more vulnerable side of Willaris. K. I melted when Sophie started singing the first line when we were recording.”
Grounding the song in piano movements and melodic basslines, Willaris. has built a textured and emotive soundscape that perfectly complements Gordi's haunting vocals for which the Bon Iver and Troye Sivan collaborator is famous.
'Indifferent' was written, recorded and produced between Willaris.'s home, Sophie's rural farm and Shangri-La Studios in Malibu (owned by Rick Rubin), after being originally conceived by Willaris. and Sophie in the early hours of the morning.
“Jack and I talked about collaborating when we were lying on the floor of the living room in my apartment listening to music at 5am,” Gordi says.
“The next day he sent me this song titled ‘Piano Man’. It had the beautiful piano part you hear in the song and it made me so sad. So I wrote a sad story to go with it about feeling nothing and called it ‘Indifferent’.”
The release of 'Indifferent' follows that of Willaris.'s '5 O'Clock' A-B side, paired with ambient counterpart 'Past Light', which harks back to his early days of collecting field recordings in Australia.
Recently, '5 O'Clock' was the feature track used for the UEFA Champions League (Union Of European Football Associations) commercial, greatly extending the reach of Willaris.'s music.
In January, a remix collection of '5 O'Clock' was released featuring interpretations of the track by rising electronic artists TSHA, Ghost Culture and Juno Mamba. All three artists bring a fresh perspective to the electronica genre with compositions that have been compared to that of heavyweights like Bonobo, Daphni and Basinski.
London-based DJ/ producer TSHA offers a diverse and intricate remix that evokes a deeper melancholy, while the Paris-based Ghost Culture reinterprets the track from a harder perspective. Finally, Willaris' Soothsayer label mate, Juno Mamba gifts a stellar debut remix integrating live instrumentation and spoken word samples.
The summer has so far seen Willaris. K perform to packed-out dance tents at major festivals including Wildlands, Beyond The Valley, Output Super Club, Origin Fields and Castaway, after supporting RÜFÜS DU SOL on their SOLACE World Tour.
