Will Sparks Is The Melbourne Sound

Producer and DJ Will Sparks is taking Melbourne, and the world, by storm following chart success with his recent tracks.

Along with the release of 'Viking' and 'Chemical Energy' on Onelove's new Melbourne Underground compilation, Will has also emerged as the leader of the ‘Melbourne Sound’ movement. The man himself says he’s trying to push the sound and evolve it further. “It’s hard to comprehend the success,” he says. “It’s not like I’m going to stop now, I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and love it as much as I have been.”

In recent times dubstep became the genre-of-choice for producers everywhere; then trap became the favourite of forward-thinking producers. But now it’s Melbourne Sound that threatens to take over the world. Will describes the structure as slowed-down psy-trance, coupled with electro and — if you like — ‘dubby’ and ‘Dutch-y’ sounds. “I always get asked what the ‘Melbourne sound’ is, and what you need to do is just listen to it. I’m putting sounds like trap and trance with big vocals in it and getting really into my producing, learning a lot and doing a lot of research to progress it even more.”

Will is keeping busy with a heavy touring schedule ahead of him. “I’m currently doing the Onelove tour for Melbourne Underground, then I tour America in a month, doing 35 shows then I come back and go straight to Europe for 6 weeks.”

Will Sparks 2With another Onelove compilation alongside Bingo Players currently being mixed, Will says the opportunities he’s received so far have been amazing. “I’ve done the tracklisting, it’s coming soon. It’s so cool to be on there, especially with Bingo Players who have been a massive inspiration to my whole career.”

According to Robin Thicke's manager, Will's new remix of Thicke's latest hit, ‘Blurred Lines’, is another winner. “I’ve spoken with Robin Thicke's manager, and they said they really like it. Robin’s manager really believes in this sound, he thinks it’s going to progress a lot round the world. I went over to America, met up with him, and worked in his studio. He gave me some amazing singers that I’ve done some originals with, so there is plenty coming out, it just takes time.”

Melbourne Underground is out now. Will Sparks will tour with Stereosonic later this year.
