Borrowing their name from a classic Seinfeld gag, Perth band Airline Food specialise in '60s psych-rock tempered by '80s synth-pop.
Born in 2016 out of a songwriting partnership of 'the two Jacks', lead singer Jack Annear and drummer Jack Seah, Airline Food is starting to pick up pace this year after a slow 2018.
“We have a better idea of what we want, we've all practised and we're ready to do better stuff,” Jack Seah says.
Airline Food gave us a taste of where they are heading in the coming months with the release of their new single 'Axe Murderer' last month.
“We got someone else to do the mixing – Broderick Madden-Scott; he works at a studio in Freo [Tunafish Recording Company] and plays in a band called Haircare,” Jack says.
“He's totally on the same page as us with the sounds we want to get. We've been gigging heaps and hoping to release more new music this year.”
Jack goes on to explain that although there are stories behind the songs they write, as songwriters they put greater emphasis on how the songs sound and feel, rather than their messaging.
“Most of it leans on the recording process because to be honest we're kind of bad at sitting down with a guitar and writing a tune sometimes,” he says of how they curate their sonic identity.
“Sometimes it happens like that but it tends to come from little demos and soundscapes laid out on a laptop with loops and layers, and then the song tends to grow from there. Each song is different but that is usually the process. Then sometimes, or at least more in recent times, songs have developed through the live aspect as well, which is exciting.”
In May, Airline Food team up with some good friends, including Newman... just kidding! They're playing a show at Rosemount Hotel with fellow Perth acts Haircare, Tanaya Harper and Smol Fish.
“We're pretty excited about that,” Jack says.
“We've got Haircare and Tanaya Harper and Smol Fish, all Perth bands. We're going to sell some shirts, so that's the reason almost for the gig.”
After that, Jack says the band are looking at another stint of writing and recording in pursuit of their next lot of releases.
“We're working towards what at the moment is looking like a short album, maybe eight tracks. Then before the album there will be a couple of new singles.”
