Hailing from the suburbs of Adelaide, West Thebarton Brothel Party came together as a garage-jam band.
As for the name? Just read on... “All it was is that we practiced in this space in West Thebarton, which is a suburb in Adelaide, and down the road there's this really, really, really obvious brothel,” says guitarist Tom Gordon.
“It's just this big, pink building with a red light out the front and there's empty pot plants out the front with used condoms and stuff in them, it's pretty gross. So we just named it after that.”
“Getting ourselves organised? We're pretty shit with it to be honest.”
Honing their sound in this unassuming industrial environment, WTPB recently released their debut EP that features the single, 'Misophonia'. “It's gone really well actually,” Tom says.
“We put it out a little while ago through Mirador Records, who work out of Melbourne. We're pretty surprised with the response, we're really happy.
"The band came together because we all wanted to mess around and play some pretty dumb garage rock, and people have really gotten into it so we're really happy.”
Following a successful launch tour for the EP, WTBP will be onstage at the after party for this year's South Australian Music Awards, an inaugural event recognising the achievements of local South Australian musicians. “It should be cool.
"I think that's the first time, because we've had the Fowler's Live SA Music Awards for years now and this South Australian Music Awards is actually their first year, so it's a different kind of thing.
"I'm actually interested to see how it goes; it's pretty cool, it's still like a bit of a fledgling thing so we're interested to see what happens but absolutely stoked to play.
“We haven't played any of these [award events] before but we've been to them. I remember last year with the Fowler's Live Music Awards, Bad//Dreems played that and that was pretty cool. And I think Tkay Maidza's played that as well; she's smashing it at the moment.”
Speaking of Bad//Dreems, West Thebarton Brothel Party also joined their fellow Adelaideans for a national tour in September. Apart from live performances, Tom says he's unsure what's next for the band in terms of recording, largely due to the fact that wrangling seven busy musicians is a challenge unto itself. “I don't really know to be honest, we haven't had much of a chance to talk about it because everyone's pretty full-on with work and uni at the moment, and their other bands.
"So I'm not sure what's going to happen. We definitely want to record soon but it's just an issue of getting everyone together again, that's more the thing.
“At the moment, because there's seven of us it's so hard to get us all together to practice so I think the next thing we want to do is just a double A-side single or something like that. I don't think we're going to do an album anytime soon, but we're thinking maybe some singles and maybe another EP, and then we'll see how we go.
“Even the EP that we did, we recorded that in July last year and it took us this long to get it out as well. And getting ourselves organised, we're just pretty shit with it to be honest.”
West Thebarton Brothel Party play the South Australian Music Awards at Fowler's Live 11 November.
