We Are Scientists won’t have you learning the periodic table, but you will find yourself researching their latest album.
“It's a pop rock album I guess, maybe on the more easy going side. Somewhat dark, probably ten percent dark... ten percent darker than grey,” jokes the group’s bass player and backing vocalist, Chris Cain.
The trio, which includes Keith Murray (guitar/ vocals) and Andy Burrows (drummer), released their latest album, ‘TV en Français’, last month. “I think this one is much more multidimensional,” admits Chris.
“We very much allowed the arrangements to get as big as we wanted to rather than trying to restrict things to sounding like a three-piece, which is what we were after in the first and third records. I think with this one there were no immediate reference points, nothing that we were consciously saying like 'oh shit if we could sound like that it would be amazing'. To me, it's sort of the first record that it's just thoroughly We Are Scientists.
“It definitely represents a more advanced songwriting ability and it sounds somewhat of a different era I would say. I think it's definitely less like a cat jumping at a toy that's being held in the air with a string, which is what our first album sounds like to me.”
We Are Scientists are excited to be playing in Australia next month, and according to the bass player are more than ready for the shows. “I think we're kind of at the top of our game as a live band right now. We just got off five weeks in Europe and I feel like ever show was sort of a victory. It felt like everybody was pleasantly surprised even though they were already fans. I'm definitely kind of riding high on being able to raise people's eyebrows at the live show.
“We haven't been in Australia and really cemented our legacy haha; that might be too strong a term... my girlfriend says 'rock their socks off!' That's probably a more reasonable goal. We'll save cementing our legacy for the next tour.” ‘TV en Français’ is available now.
