A brief glimpse at the goings-on in the WA music industry, rounded up by WAM aka West Australian Music.
Girls Rock!
WAM’s second Girls Rock! WA camp took place earlier this month at North Metropolitan TAFE in Leederville and was a wonderful celebration of local community and music. With the aim to empower female, trans, and non-binary youth, the week-long programme featured workshops, band rehearsals, instrument instruction, and guest speakers to inspire and nurture participants and volunteers alike. The week culminated in a showcase gig involving all participants at the Rosemount Hotel (5 October) that was attended by over 300 people. Stay tuned for details of WAM’s next Girls Rock! camp in January 2020.
New Noise Collective Library Sessions
WAM’s youth music council, New Noise Collective, recently kicked off a second series of all-ages gigs at the State Library of WA (12 October). The series runs for the next five months and will feature artists such as Grace Barbé, Queency, Segue and Odette Mercy. Follow @newnoiseco on Facebook for all the details.WAMFest Digital Exhibition
WAM, in partnership with the State Library of Western Australia, is excited to present a digital exhibition of images that represent 100 years of music in WA as part of the WAMFest celebrations. The digital exhibition aims to capture the feeling of the times as well as a representation of the artists and live music spaces that have contributed to WA’s culture of contemporary music over the past 100 years.Curated by Jacquie Kelly, Joe Coci, Chris O’Halloran and guided by SLWA’s Adam Trainer and WAM’s very own Georgia Kennedy, the exhibition opens 22 October and runs until the closing of WAMFest 2019 (3 November) in the State Library foyer.
Sounds Of The Kimberley
WAM’s Regional Officer Nigel Bird has been out capturing the sounds of regional WA with producers Matt Gio and Dan Carroll, the trio travelling all the way to Broome last month to work in a makeshift studio in a historical pearling warehouse. The project, titled 'Sounds Of The Kimberley', is WAM’s eleventh recording project in regional WA as part of a statewide programme to unearth and support musicians in regional and remote areas.Launchpad (upcoming local launches). . .
