A brief glimpse at the goings-on in the WA music industry, rounded up by WAM aka West Australian Music.
GIRLS ROCK! WA APRIL CAMP
April 17 saw WAM wrap up another edition of the Girls Rock! WA Camps.Across five days, female, trans and non-binary youth aged 11-17 attended the day camp where they formed bands, participated in a range of workshops including song writing, DJing, building relationships and taking care of your mental health, and received essential band prac-time with the help of experienced mentors pulled right from our local scene.
On top of this, the campers were treated to some amazing lunchtime performances from local artists including Sofa, Axe Girl, DJ Sepsi and Leah Grant.
To celebrate the end of the camp, family and friends were invited to a special showcase event at Scarborough's iconic venue, the Indian Ocean Hotel where audiences were treated to some unbelievable performances from this year's first groups: Goodbye Eddy, D.O.B, Blood Loss, Distorted Mayo and Graduating Class – certainly ones to keep an eye out for.
SOUNDS OF THE MIDWEST
WAM are delighted to announce the official release of 'Sounds Of The Mid West', the 14th compilation album from our regional recording project.Recorded on Yamatji Country, 'Sound Of The Mid West' is the first compilation album to emerge from the expansive region, which has a land mass more than twice the size of Victoria and a population of approximately 52,000.
The compilation provides a snapshot of the region's original songwriters and artists, featuring acts ranging from 18 to 87 years old, 5 First Nations artists, and 8 artists offering their debut releases.
Unfortunately due to the recent devastating effects of Tropical Cyclone Seroja, the album's launch event will be postponed. However, the project is available now to stream across Spotify and Soundcloud, so jump online, have a listen and support these incredible regional artists.
LIBRARY SESSIONS
We're excited to reveal the fourth series of Library Sessions in partnership with Act Belong Commit; all-ages live music events at the State Library of WA organised by the inspired young people in our New Noise Collective.Led by a small group of passionate music lovers (aged 16-20), the New Noise Collective was brought together by WAM to develop and implement practical ideas to strengthen WA's youth music scene, including organising and promoting events that help connect young crowds with emerging local acts.
The Library Sessions series is one of the flagship activities from WAM's youth music council and aims to provide opportunities for people of all ages to experience live music in a safe and welcoming environment. 29 May - Siobhan Cotchin & Teen Angst; 26 June - Smol Fish & The Stamps; 31 July - Anesu & Goof Troop.
