WAM's World: West Australian Music News May 2017

The Money War
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.
A brief glimpse at the goings-on in the West Australian music industry, rounded up by WAM (West Australian Music).

SWEET, SWEET SONGS

Having boosted the careers of Methyl Ethel, Tired Lion, KUČKA, Beni Bjah and more in recent years, cast eyes (and ears!) on WA’s next crop of songwriting stars at the WAM Song Of The Year Awards Party. One of Australia’s biggest song comps, the winners will be revealed on 17 May at the WA Maritime Museum (Perth). Everyone’s invited, with The Money War, Ben Matthews Presents LIVEWYRE, Dan Howls and more keeping the good times rolling.

TETSUO TICKLES

Tetsuo is N’bridge’s latest offering, the ‘90s Japanese grunge-inspired late-night venue taking over from Ginger at the top of William St. Among the changes, they’ve upgraded to two rooms, one of which is doing a mighty-fine job of showcasing live acts. They’re now taking bookings.

WHEATBELT WONDERS

The next Wheatbelt Touring Circuit sees talented Perth and Wheatbelt artists showcasing just why they’ve won WAMAwards or been selected for WAM projects; Rag N’ Bone and Carla Geneve play Riverside Hotel, Northam,19 May, Bruce Rock District Club 20 May (Gauge Harder supports), and finishing in Bindoon at the Town Hall 21 May (Ezereve and Madi Henry support) with all shows free entry.

GREAT SOUTHERN GREATNESS

WAM’s ‘Sounds Of’ series has exposed the incredible depth of talent found in regional WA and the next in the series, Sounds Of The Great Southern, launches at Albany Town Hall 27 May. The ten-track compilation CD features The Tidswell Twins, Willow, 40 Kays Out, Ron Coyne, Rastatrix, Blue Stuka, Carla Geneve, Mary Jayne & The Smoke Detectors, Kris Nelson and Isla Imogen, all of who play live at the launch.

WAMORE…

• The beloved Rosemount Hotel has renovated their main room and it looks (and sounds!) spectacular. Get in there.
• Perth-born Gemma Pike is now the Assistant Music Director at triple j, which can only be a good thing for WA artists.
• If you’re a member and would like to help shape the future of WA music, WAM’s AGM is being held at Universal Bar (Northbridge) 24 May, 5.30-7pm.
• With a stack of WA artists previously impressing at Music Matters Live, applications close 27 May to showcase at Singapore’s cross between WAMFest and BIGSOUND.
AMP’s Tomorrow Fund is offering $1 million in grants to Australians doing great things, including musicians. Applications close 16 May.
• And… stating the obvious… the arrival of scenestr in WA presents amazing new promo opportunities for local acts, promoters and more, and all in glorious, glossy print. Long live scenestr!
