WAM's World West Australian Music News June 2021

Smol Fish's single launch takes place at The Bird (Perth) 16 June.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A brief glimpse at the goings-on in the WA music industry, rounded up by WAM aka West Australian Music.

DEMOS FROM THE GOLDFIELDS/ESPERANCE

WAM is excited to launch the fifteenth instalment of our acclaimed regional recording project series, with artist applications now open for 'Demos From The Goldfields/Esperance Region'.

Following projects 'Sounds Of The Goldfields’ (2016) and 'Demos From The Northern Goldfields' (2018), WAM is returning to the region to showcase the artists, songs and stories in key areas not featured on the previous compilations.

'Demos From The Goldfields/Esperance Region' will provide regional and remote artists the opportunity to professionally record an original song with some of WA's best award-winning producers, including Matt Gio and Dan Carroll (Rada Studios); and Andy Lawson (Debaser Studio) at pop-up studios in Warburton and Esperance this August.

The final compilation will be released in 2022 on digital streaming platforms, limited-edition CD package, and distributed by WAM to local and national radio, industry and public.

WAM Regional Officer, Nigel Bird notes the magnitude of the upcoming recording project. "This project we're about to embark on is enormous.

"It will take us on a 4,000 kilometre journey to recording artists that live between the Great Victoria and Gibson Deserts, and others who are between Esperance and the Great Australian Bight – all in one region."

Applications to take part in the project are now open to original songwriters, artists and acts/ bands of any experience, age, and musical genre based in the region. Applications close Monday 14 June.

2021 SONG OF THE YEAR

The search for WA's best songwriters draws one step closer as WAM reveals the impressive pool of nominees for the 2021 Song Of The Year competition presented by Act-Belong-Commit.

With over 1,200 entries from across the state, the 2021 nominees are a true testament to the talent and innovation of WA songwriters primed for celebration at this year's Awards Party.

WA's premier songwriting competition recognises homegrown talent and showcases the powerful stories and finest songs from across the state.

This year's nominees are now in the running for a share of over $45,000 in prizes donated by generous prize and studio sponsors, and the opportunity to join the star-studded ranks of previous winners: Stella Donnelly, Beni Bjah, Kučka, Little Birdy, Abbe May, The Waifs and Methyl Ethel.

Leading the pack this year with multiple nominations each are Carla Geneve, Ella Gilbert, Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks, Pat Chow, Pinstripe, RATSALAD, Siobhan Cotchin, The Struggling Kings, Timothy Nelson and Warriyangga Warralgurniya.

The 2020 overall Song Of The Year winner was Carla Geneve with '2001', the second year running she has won the major award.

After taking the iconic awards event online in 2020, we are excited to bring nominees and music-lovers back to Freo.Social for the Song Of The Year 2021 Awards Party on Wednesday 30 June.
