WAM's World West Australian Music News December 2021

WA Music Week returns March 2022.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A brief glimpse at the goings-on in the WA music industry, rounded up by WAM aka West Australian Music.

BLUES AT BRIDGETOWN

Running since 1993, 12-14 November saw the return of WA's beloved Blues At Bridgetown festival. WAM was proud to present our own stage at the Freemasons Hotel, featuring some of the best artists regional WA has to offer.

Audiences were treated to the sounds of Danny Haines, Shae Digney and WAM Song Of The Year nominees Latehorse and Kiera Jas.

WAM extends a huge thank you to the Blues At Bridgetown team for their continued support for regional and remote artists. We can't wait for next year.

GIRLS ROCK

Following the success of six Girls Rock! WA camps to date, WAM opens applications for the seventh camp to take place 24-28 January.

The programme, which originated in the US and is now practiced successfully around the globe, is a week-long day camp of band rehearsals, workshops, and fun activities designed to empower and inspire aspiring young female, trans, and non-binary musicians (aged 10-17).

The programme tackles the issue of gender imbalance in the music industry with a focus on the key areas of creativity, positivity, community and empowerment.

The seventh instalment of the Girls Rock! WA camp will feature a range of specialty workshops with notable WA musicians including songwriting with punk singer-songwriter Sara Salt (Nervous) and old-school poster making with Ash Ramsay (Cold Meat/ Krimi). The camp will culminate with a showcase performance by all campers at The Bird.

WAM REFLECTS ON 2021

To say 2021 has been a roller coaster for the WA music community would be a severe understatement. Alas, our community is strong and we look to the future with optimism.

WAM has certainly had a whirlwind of year starting with the launch of monthly Girls Rock! WA jam sessions and the success of the very first WA Music Week. With a direct economic impact of $16.9 million, the 10-day programme saw the inaugural Hear & Now concerts at HBF Stadium alongside the annual WAMAwards, WAMFest and WAMCon plus funding distributed to over 56 live music events around the state.

The latest of our regional recording project compilation albums was launched in Geraldton, and we kicked off recording for the next in Esperance and the Ngaanyatjarra Lands.

The songwriting talent of our state was once again celebrated at the WAM Song Of The Year Awards, while there were over 130 workshops and forums held throughout the year to support our incredible community.

We look forward to bringing even bigger and better things to the sector in 2022. WAM wishes everyone a happy holidays and wonderful new year and hopes you are surrounded by the people you love and, of course, good music.
