WAM's World: West Australian Music News December 2018

Who Run The World is a free, all-day workshop for female-identifying 14 to 18 year olds returning to WAAPA in February 2019.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A brief glimpse at the goings-on in the WA music industry, rounded up by WAM aka West Australian Music.

WAM’s Big Year

Here at WAM, we’re gearing up for a well-earned break after an absolutely massive year. We’ve crunched the numbers and throughout 2018 we facilitated a whopping 764 paid-performance opportunities for West Australian artists across WAM presented and partnered events.

Looking at who landed the opportunities in 2018; we’re proud to say 47 per cent were female-identifying, 27 per cent were regional based, and 13 per cent were Indigenous. As fierce champions of WA music of all shapes and forms, WAM values diversity in music and will continue to fight for it in 2019.

First Ever Girls Rock! WA Camp Kicks Off

We were absolutely blown away by the interest for our first ever Girls Rock! WA camp, which kicks off January 2019 at full capacity. The week-long day camp presents an incredible opportunity to inspire and empower female, trans, and non-binary youth through music.

Campers will learn an instrument, join a band, write a song, and perform at a showcase, all while learning from industry mentors. We can’t wait to see all the talented young rockers take the Mojos Bar stage Saturday 19 January for the Girls Rock! WA Showcase.

Applications Open For Who Run The World

Another opportunity for young, female-identifying musicians. Presented by PIAF in partnership with WAM and WAAPA, Who Run The World is a free, all-day workshop for female-identifying 14 to 18 year olds returning to WAAPA in February 2019. Participants will learn from a solid line-up of industry pros including Carla Geneve, Elise Reitze and Rosie Taylor (Feels), Phoebe Gunson (Your Girl Pho), Libby Noble (RTRFM), Kerry Fletcher (Web Rumours), Jemma Bradford (Kopano) and Hayley Jane Ayers (360 Artist Logistics).

Applications for this excellent opportunity close 18 January, 2019.

Songwriting Workshop With Jere Sosa

In partnership with Act-Belong-Commit and Beaufort Street Song Writers Club, WAM invites aspiring songwriters and musicians to attend a one-off songwriting workshop with local and Buenos Aires sensation Jere Sosa on 20 December at Defectors Bar.

Jere will unravel the mysteries of songwriting and discuss how chord progressions and harmony can be used to express feelings before treating participants to an intimate live performance. Tickets are just $5 on the door.
