WAAX Go On Hiatus But Not Before Farewelling Fans With 'The Parting Gift' Live Show

WAAX will farewell their fans at The Triffid (Brisbane) 9 June.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A decade together as a group, Brisbane's WAAX have revealed they're taking an extended break from recording music and performing live.

With no set return date except frontwoman Maz DeVita promising "I will be back one day stronger than ever", WAAX will farewell fans with a home-town show at The Triffid (9 June) the band have dubbed 'The Parting Gift'.

"This is for you, the community," DeVita says. "This project WAAX has always belonged to you first and foremost. Ten years is a long-ass time, enough years to experience the best and weather the worst.

"This is the most f...ed up thing I've ever had to write because I never thought it possible: WAAX as you know it is going on hiatus.

"All I ever wanted was to play gigs and make records – who knew sh.t could get so complicated.

"To those who have supported us through the roller coaster we give you this parting gift as an offering of thanks and love.

"I love you all more than you know, for real, you're the reason we did any of this and kept hanging on. I will be back one day stronger than ever. x."

After winning the triple j Unearthed BIGSOUND competition in 2014, WAAX have released two independent EPs: 'Holy Sick' (2015) and 'Wild & Weak' (2017) as well as two studio albums: 'Big Grief' (2019) and 'At Least I'm Free' (via Dew Process in 2022).

WAAX play 'The Parting Gift' at The Triffid (Brisbane) 9 June.
