On a sticky and stormy Brisbane summer’s day (23 January), Vibes on a Summer’s Day crossed the border to Brisbane for an all-dayer at The Triffid, featuring a showcase of pumping local, national and international DJs and live acts.
Vibes on a Summer’s Day is known to many of Brisbane's older party people as one of the original-summer-all-day-dance music events and is renowned for showcasing acts like: Jamiroquai, Norman Jay and Groove Armada.
Originating in Bondi and travelling to the Brisbane Riverstage from the mid '90s to 2003, it’s more than exciting to see one of Australia’s best summer dance parties returning to us once again after a 13-year hiatus.
I arrived at sunset and the party was already in full swing with the all-day dancers. The Triffid hosted the festival wonderfully and although Vibes has been significantly downscaled for its return, the festival still boasted two arenas of funk, soul, hip hop, beats, reggae and dub and successfully lived up to its summer feel good vibe.
As the sun sets, both the beer garden and main room are starting to kick off and the classic sounds of local DJ Butterz sees everyone getting their vibe on into the night. Frenzie is getting real with some dirty old-school hip hop beats mixed in with some cheesy party tunes and now if you are standing, there is nothing else to do but dance.
A massive highlight was British act Faze Action, who are known for an extensive tour with Groove Armada back in 2000 and have previously headlined Vibes on a Summer’s Day in 2002. Their music blended house, Latin, funk and disco and the energy is huge, sending everyone into a sweaty summer-time dance frenzy.
Closing the festival with Kid Kenobi and Jazzie B, Vibes on a Summer’s Day delivered as promised and brought the funk, groove and all of the summery goodness that the festival is famously renowned for.
We'd love to see its return to Brisbane next year for another all-day-sweaty-summer-dance party.
