Sydney-based singer-songwriter Celia Pavey, aka Vera Blue, released her single 'Lady Powers' featuring Kodie Shane earlier this month.
“'Lady Powers' is a song that I was really excited to release,” Vera says.
“So we released it on [my] album last year 'Perennial'. And then we've re-released it as a single. It's got Kodie Shane on it from America and her part is really cool.”
Vera Blue explains that the song has a couple of different meanings. “'Lady Powers' is a few things really. That's what I really like about this song, is that women and men can relate to this song in whatever way they wish to.
“But for me 'Lady Powers' is your body, it's your dignity, it's your self-respect, it's your confidence. 'Lady Powers' can also be the women that you're surrounded by, so the women that keep you inspired and uplift you.
“But mainly it's your body and your self-respect, and knowing that you shouldn't have to change for someone.”
This is the first time that Vera Blue has collaborated with Atlanta hip hop artist Kodie Shane. “I hadn't met her until a couple weeks ago when we were doing the music video together.
“I had been linked to her music and I really fell in love with her vocal tones and her sense of rhythm. So she did her part for the song and it was perfect. It had a really good swing on the song and it added a really cool, fun energy to the song making it a little more playful which is what I really enjoyed.”
In addition to the single, Vera Blue is set to release a remix EP. It features remixes of 'Lady Powers' by female producers including TOKiMONSTA and Alice Ivy. “Once we wrote and released the song 'Lady Powers', it became a thing we wanted to extend.
“There's so many female producers that can do so many crazy, cool things with their art. And we wanted to create a body of work of females from all around the world that we sent the song to, and [the producers we approached] really vibed it and took the song and recreated it in their own way while still keeping that really powerful vibe. Vera is already thinking about her next record.
“[I'm] always writing, but more so now just being inspired by different sounds and different lyrical content as well.
“I'm not in a relationship at the moment, so I'm kind of noticing other things going on around me. That's kind of where 'Lady Powers' came from as well.
“Like, I had gotten over heartbreak and I was kind of delving into new relationships and recognising how I shouldn't be treated or how I was changing for people. I was kind of shaken by wanting to adapt for other people's needs.”
Vera will tour the east coast of Australia to promote 'Lady Powers' after making appearances at the national run of Groovin The Moo events. “I'm really excited to see Duke Dumont [at Groovin The Moo], [I've] been a huge fan of his forever.
“Also, Confidence Man are playing as well and I've always wanted to see them play. Like, there's some really, really great artists that I'm pumped to hang out with backstage as well.
“Last year I was able to get up with Slumberjack for 'Fracture' and that was my only glimpse of Groovin The Moo. It's a really great festival, so it should be really fun,” Vera says.
'Lady Powers - Power Ladies' remix EP is released 13 April.
