On Friday night (13 September), Vera Blue entered the stage at the new HQ Complex and gave undoubtedly one of the best performances that stage has ever seen.
With an amazing intro to ‘The Way That You Love Me’ she kicked off the night, emerging in a dress of glitter and tulle.
At only 25, Celia Pavey's career has taken off immensely since her third-place win on 'The Voice' in 2013. A few years later she rebranded herself as Vera Blue and released her first EP ‘Fingertips’, which was of course included in the tour set list.
‘Magazine’ and ‘Settle’ also found themselves in the first half of her set either side of her debut EP's title track.
And then came a song I was remiss to have never heard before, because how could I have not heard something so wonderful – ‘Overachiever’ graced the intimate audience’s eardrums, and I immediately fell in love with the music and the lyrics. “You get it too easy, which makes me think twice before I start believing.”
She later announced a brand-new track, which is yet to be released, called ‘Lie To Me’. An interesting song with an upbeat tempo – I urge you all to give it a listen as soon as it is released.
triple j favourites ‘All The Pretty Girls’ and ‘Lady Powers’ followed, continuing the more upbeat rhythm in the room, her soaring voice never faltering, hitting notes I can’t even describe. And then came ‘Mended’, a heartbreaking song, which brought her to her knees on stage, with a message that everyone in the room could have related to at one time or another.
The high notes were hit flawlessly, the music so raw and powerful in its simplicity. An awe-inspiring performance of a song everyone has come to know and love.
‘The Way That You Love Me’ was followed by 2017's Hottest 100 #15 song ‘Regular Touch’ that closed out the night.
A magical evening with a young, beautiful and incredibly influential Australian redhead, who speaks volumes of what life should be as a woman despite heartbreak and hurdles. Thanks for spreading the love, Vera Blue.
