Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ voted #1 in triple j’s Hottest 100
triple j’s Music Director Richard Kingsmill says of the song “Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ is a first for the Hottest 100 in a couple of respects. We've never had a winning song from an artist who is so new that they've not even had an album to their name yet. It's also the first #1 to have been written on a ukulele. After its first airing in March, the simple charm and endearing vulnerability of ‘Riptide’ stayed with listeners throughout the rest of 2013. But even as it did, it was still in the shadows of the world conquering ‘Royals’ and ‘Get Lucky’. Few picked it to trump either of those. But it has, and deservingly so, become our 11th Australian #1. Now we wait excitedly for that album to arrive!”
Vance Joy wasn’t the only act to achieve big things this past year. At 16, Lorde is the youngest solo artist ever to appear in the Hottest 100. She is also only the second artist to have three songs from a debut album place in the Top 20, the first being Wolfmother back in 2005. Another young artist shaping their own unique sound and appearing in the Hottest 100 incredibly early in his career is triple j Unearthed winner Remi.
1,492,619 votes were cast by 173,658 music fans, and over 5,700 Hottest 100 parties were held around the world, making triple j’s Hottest 100 the world’s biggest musical democracy.
Recent years have seen worldwide hits like Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ ‘Thrift Shop’ identify themselves as clear winners early on. This year was a little different. A certain ukulele solo artist was always going to be high up in the Hottest 100, but 2013 was an incredible year for music, with a series of standout songs hotly debated to take out the top spot. In the end it was Melbourne artist Vance Joy’s song ‘Riptide’ which won the hearts of triple j listeners, who crowned it #1 in 2013’s Hottest 100.
Breaking the list down further and there’s a lot of interesting stats. We previously mentioned that songs released in May were among the most popular. Now we can tell you that in fact 17 songs released that month made the cut. We also told you there are 42 songs from debut artists appearing in the Hottest 100 for the first time, these include Lorde, The Preatures, Touch Sensitive, HAIM, London Grammar, Violent Soho, The Kite String Tangle, Big Scary and RÜFÜS. 29 of the songs in this year’s list come from solo artists, including James Blake, Matt Corby, Andy Bull and Dustin Tebbutt. 2013 was also the year of the feature artist with 21 artists featuring on other artist’s tracks, including Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Julian Casablancas from The Strokes and Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend.
Each year we see a handful of popular cover songs, and this year was no exception with four placing in the Hottest 100. However, 2013 marks the first time in 15 years that a cover made it into the same Hottest 100 as the source material, courtesy of San Cisco’s Like a Version rendition of Daft Punk’s glittery disco revival ‘Get Lucky’.
When looking at the location breakdown of the Hottest 100, Australia was the big winner with locals making up 44% of the chart. A further 24 songs came from the USA, with the UK not far behind at 23. Canada gave us two songs and Norway one. Thanks to two big contenders, Daft Punk and Lorde, France has four songs in the countdown and New Zealand has three, respectively.
Following on from Daft Punk’s whopping four songs in the Hottest 100, Lorde, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Queens of the Stone Age, RÜFÜS, Haim, London Grammar, Disclosure and CHVRCHES also scored big with three songs each, followed by Vance Joy, Kanye West, Cloud Control, Arcade Fire, Illy, Bring Me The Horizon, Boy & Bear, Andy Bull, Rudimental and Bliss N Eso all with two songs making the list.
