Rising to fame as a YouTube sensation, Troye Sivan ventured back to his Western Australian hometown on 11 January.
This was his rescheduled show after cancelling the previous event with laryngitis difficulties. Sivan performed a fabulous show. His mature vocals for a 20-year-old perfectly paired with the synth-pop beats of his recent album, melting the hearts of boys and girls alike.

The night started with a DJ set from Tyde Levi, Sivan’s brother, who has also risen to YouTube stardom. Tyde was amazing when it came to getting the crowd moving – I have never seen a more energetic DJ!

He set the theatre up for a good night with his remix dance tracks of Adele’s 'Hello' and 'Rolling In The Deep', Justin Bieber’s 'Sorry', and the crowd favourite – Miley Cyrus’ 'Party In The USA'. Tyde, if you’re out there – I need these tracks for the gym (I don’t even go to the gym but if they have music like this then sign me up!).

I personally had not listened to much of Sivan’s music previous to his debut album’s release last month – but I was convinced to buy 'Blue Neighborhood' after hearing 'Wild', which was hammered by my roommates in the early hours of the morning.
This young man has a deep, angelic voice providing easy-listening music that can be paired perfectly with cheese and bubbly on a warm night. However, I'm always skeptical about the quality of an artist’s studio record verses a live performance.

I entered the Astor Theatre with high hopes of a good performance from the Perth local. All I can say is that I was not at all let down. Sivan began the night with his hit 'Bite' followed by 'Fools'. It was obvious that Troye was in his element – his almost liquid dancing was highly contagious; I even found myself bopping around the photographer’s pit!
The crowed lapped up the energy produced by the music and sang along the majority of the time – interrupted by squeals of excitement and happiness when 'eye contact' was made with Troye.

One of my favourite performances of the night was that of 'Suburbia'. Troye stated that he wrote the song in LA when he was feeling homesick “because LA is really far away from Perth… actually everything is really far away from Perth!” He continued to talk about how he missed the sunsets with his family and all of his friends.
The rawness of the lyrics in this song paired with the amazing, personal performance by Troye had the entire theatre awestruck – a beautiful moment for both performer and patrons. During this moment, all of the fans held up signs and glowsticks that said 'WELCOME HOME TROYE'. As soon as he saw a glimpse of one of the signs he asked: “are you guys trying to make me cry?”

Troye's encore included a beautiful acoustic-rendition of his first single, 'Happy Little Pill', a definite crowd pleaser. This was followed by 'Youth', where he said to the crowd: “Lose your effing minds!” (He had stated before this moment that he couldn’t swear because there were too many members of his family in the crowd!)
The thing I enjoyed most about the show was how many of Troye’s friends and family had attended. He began the show by saying: “I almost recognised every second person in the crowd!” Throughout the night he stopped multiple times to express how surreal the experience of playing in his hometown was and how grateful he was for each and every person there – extremely humbling!
There could not have been a better venue to accommodate this performance. Aside from not having a larger capacity, the Astor Theatre has amazing acoustics and incredible lighting which creates a beautiful, atmospheric show – which was further enhanced by the whimsical sounds of Troye’s music.
