Brisbane hip hop collective Triple3 — aka 7ravesty, Caughtz and DJ Immaculate, often joined by eMCYTe, XXI and Tricksta — are a throwback to the '90s with their sample-heavy, boom bap production, dope word play and intricate scratch hooks.
They also like to smoke up occasionally. Is that a crime? Well, yes, actually. But regardless, here are their top five tracks to blaze to.
5. ‘Mary Jane’ — Rick James
Classic old track with the dopest vibe to it. Rick breakin’ down his love for weed as if it was his chick. I first discovered this track when the original ‘Friday’ movie soundtrack dropped — it always makes me wanna blaze trees.
4. ‘Good Times’ — Styles P
Swizz Beats and Saint Denson beat over the dopest Freda Pain sample, P proclaims his love for getting lit with that grimey touch that the Lox and The East Coast have always had locked down. This is definitely a fav. How can you go past the first line: “Every day I need an ounce n a half”. Hahahaha.
3. ‘Mary Jane’ — Scarface
This is the second track on this list with the same name, but what a classic. Face’s 1997 OG manic depressive ode to his one true love, Mary Jane, his true friend in his time of need. The hook sits so well on this beat. "Mary Jane never fails to fulfill the brain / Take away all my pain."
2. ‘How High’ — Redman & Method Man
Not only two of the biggest weed heads on the planet, but two of the illest rhymers on the planet. The beat is killer and I couldn’t compile this list without a Red & Mef track. "Look up in the sky / It’s a bird it’s a plane / It’s the Funk Doctor Spoc smokin’ buddha on a train.”
1. ‘I Wanna Get High’ — Cypress Hill
Now a lot of people are going to argue that #1 should be ‘Hits From The Bong’. I say, “Fuck you!” This is the illest track to sit back and blaze too. Muggs murders this smoked out beat, and when B-Real kicks off with “I waaant too get hiiiigh / Sooo High...” it’s time to blaze.
Triple3 support Devin The Dude at Coniston Lane February 12. Bill Murray supports their right to get high.
