Hailing from the northern suburbs of Brisbane, three-piece outfit TrashQueen have been kicking around since 2010.
Favouring the late ’70s sounds of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, guitarist and songwriter Sean Jackson has big plans for the future. “The dream is to get out on the road and play as many shows to as many people as we can,” Sean says. “There’s nothing better than being on stage and giving it all you can and seeing how people react to it.”
The band – made up of Sean, his brother Wayne Jackson and Nik Schultz – describe their sound as 'heavily blues-driven rock' that is 'a little bit different' from other sounds currently coming out of Brisbane. “I’m a huge fan of blues and that’s just sort of ingrained into everything I play, it’s where a lot of our ideas for riffs comes from, and the ideas and emotion we put through it,” Sean says.
“The city has influenced us a bit as far as the music scene and there are a lot of local bands we take influence from, you know, just seeing them and seeing what everyone’s up to. But also there are not lots and lots of bands doing the same thing, there are a lot of rock bands but it’s a little bit different.”
A self-confessed lover of vintage rock & roll, his number one record being Black Sabbath’s ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’, Jackson is convinced his favoured sound is not merely a thing of the past. “It’s not as heavily mainstream as it was back then but you do see a few bands that have come through with a similar sort of sound,” he says.
“You’ve got Jet, Wolfmother, and a few other bands with sounds like that. Usually it’s a bit more polished than it was back in the day, and unfortunately I can’t see it being as big as it was back then. It’s kind of cool as a niche market though because then you get people who are more into it and it’s sort of more personal.”
The rest of 2015 seems set up for TrashQueen to continue delivering to this niche market with an album in the works and a bunch of live shows. “There’s more magic when we’re all there doing it together... we just want to get out in a van and drive and play in front of whoever will watch us.”
TrashQueen play VIBE at The Indooroopilly Hotel 22 May, the Prince Of Wales Hotel 29 May and the Coolangatta Hotel 30 May.
