Track By Track: Clio Renner Discusses Her New EP

Clio Renner's new EP, 'Something Left To Leave Behind', is released 23 April, 2018.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Clio Renner - who has been playing keys for the SBS 'Rockwiz' band since 2015 and touring with the likes of Angus and Julia Stone, Deborah Conway and Tim Rogers - will release her new EP, 'Something Left To Leave Behind', next week.

2017 was a busy year for Clio. She spent the year touring with Killing Heidi, was the first female Musical Director for The Age Music Victoria Awards, and premiered a new collaborative work 'Like Running Water' for the Melbourne Festival alongside artists Ella Thompson and Becky Zui Shen.

Now ready to focus all her attention on flying solo, Clio called upon a slew of Australian music royalty and friends including Davey Lane (You Am I), Julia Stone, Ross Irwin (The Cat Empire) and Hannah Cameron who all performed on various tracks that feature on the 'Something Left To Leave Behind' EP.

Clio shares a little background behind each song that features on the EP.

'Something Left To Leave Behind'

"I've been told a mix of Bjork and Radiohead. Hey, I'm not complaining. My housemate and good friend, Tilman Robinson, did the string arrangement for this and captured the mood exquisitely."

'Lying Still'

"When you love somebody just so much that they make 'the world crawl away'. That's what this song speaks about - even if you know you're lying to yourself. Julia Stone recorded an extra layer of ethereal backing vocals that broke my heart into a million and one pieces."

'Into Other Arms'

"The first single off the EP and still my favourite I think. I still melt hearing that baritone guitar."

'Sleep For Years'

"'Sleep For Years' speaks of a relationship that has been irrevocably damaged. I wanted the song to remind listeners of the fragility of trust, the layered complexity of family ties and the strength required to accept the judgement of people we love."

'Only One'

"I was most nervous about recording this, because it was just me. Only one. And I had set aside about four hours for tracking thinking we'd need to do it over and over again. I had perfection in sight you see. We did one take and Adam said: 'Great. I think we're done.'

"But as I listened back I thought: 'Are you mad!? There are so many blemishes. Cracks. Imperfections. No.' We used the hours searching for the wrong thing, because by the end I realised that the impurities were actually what made this song what it needed to be - honest. Always listen to your engineer!"

'Something Left To Leave Behind’ EP is available from 23 April. Clio Renner plays Gasometer Upstairs (Melbourne) 26 April and Bridge Hotel (Castlemaine) 28 April.
