Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is a dance producer acting like a chef who, having removed the main ingredients of a standard meal, has created something beyond delicious.
“Dance music can basically be done by numbers. You put all the building blocks in that everybody knows and it can sound good, sound passable, but there's nothing there at all. There's no substance. I wanted to take away all the obvious bits and see if it still works.”
TEED is a creation of the slim, dark-haired Orlando Higginbottom who could easily be mistaken for a cast member of Skins. Originally from Oxfordshire, England, Orlando's father was a choir conductor and music was a positive influence. “It had a really good effect on my childhood, I just got to do loads of music which was amazing and great training.”
TEED released his much-anticipated debut album Trouble in June; it has been heralded as unique and progressive dance music. “I don’t like it when people listen to music for completely the wrong reasons. When something just becomes cool, people listen to it but they're not actually listening to it. They'll just be at the right party.”
With the current success of Trouble and international tours booked for 2013, TEED ponders the future and what changes may be in store for his music. “If there's going to be major change with my sound it’ll happen in the next year. The music that works for 300 people doesn’t really work if you’re playing to 2,000 people. The sound may be simpler.”
Australia can look forward to the wild shows TEED is known for now. His is a multi-faceted live show with writhing dancers, intense lighting systems and his ‘80s British synth-pop, vintage sounding contemporary electro will be here early next year. Oh, and he loves a good full body costume.
“A costume and dancers are coming to Australia — we're just trying to figure out how to get the lights there. I like making and doing something that brings different people together as much as possible."
