Top 5 Nights At The New Globe Theatre So Far

Tomorrow, Brisbane live venue New Globe Theatre will celebrate their first birthday.

The multi-purpose space in Fortitude Valley, which has been called 'esoteric', 'eclectic' and 'eccentric', will celebrate its first year of trading with art installations, music, poetry and all kinds of treats for the dedicated New Globe patron.

The night will also feature the Some Can't album launch. Other performers appearing are: Dead Wolves, Muddy Chanter and N.brahj.

Venue proprietor Paul Robinson reflects with his Top 5 nights of the past 12 months.

5. Steve Kilbey and Robin Hitchcock

Brisbane turned up in its tens to see these troubadours do their acoustic thing. It wasn’t the biggest crowd, but the sheer artistry certainly rates this show as a Top 5. Two send-outs for more white wine during the night, but a couple of extra wines don’t hurt when it’s an easy walk home to New Farm.

4. Arundel

The local, electro act were the first to sell-out the cinema. The room was transformed into an amazing wonderland – the sets were artistic and just plain beautiful. The first performer of any sort to show us the true potential of the theatre space. A gentle group of fans that wanted to add fresh lime to everything they drank.

3. King

The band no one in Brisbane had heard of came down from Townsville and killed the night. A huge crowd of mainly FNQ expats that wanted to add Red Bull to everything they drank, but at least they danced more than any other crowd we’ve ever seen. Someone needs to get these guys touring more often.

2. Dead Letter Circus

Sold out the main room in record time to do the first show of their recent national acoustic tour. Not so much acoustic renditions of the songs but total re-imaginings, it is easy to see the class of these guys and what sets them apart. A subdued and respectful crowd drank us out of bourbon and all went home quietly.

1. Mojo Burning Festival

The mighty Mojo Burning Festival has the motto: ‘all killer no filler’. The crowd thought that as well, pretty well all arriving at 2pm and staying till stumps. Not just a Top 5 for the New Globe, but one of my best Top 5 moments in 35 years-plus of what is becoming an increasingly cynical live music viewing life. Highlight of the day: the best set I’ve ever seen from The Royal Artillery when they ruled the cinema. Easily one of the best live sets I’ve ever seen from anyone, anywhere. We closed the bar 15 minutes early – there was just nothing left to sell.

Celebrate the New Globe Theatre’s First Birthday on Friday 7th November.
