Top 5 Musical Influences With Benny Lackner

Benny Lackner Trio
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Acclaimed New York-based jazz outfit, The Benny Lackner Trio, are set to play the New Globe Theatre for a one-night-only show this weekend, alongside Brisbane-based jazz-fusion group, The Chris Poulsen Trio.

Promoting their fifth studio album, ‘Sisikiyou’, The Benny Lackner Trio features Benny Lackner on piano and effects, Matthieu Chazarenc on drums and Paul Kleber on bass and effects. The record was recorded in Jazzanove Studio, Berlin, and features a modern, groove-oriented sound, and includes a David Bowie cover.

Lackner has been described by jazz giant Brad Mehldau, as having a ‘distinctive compositional voice that sounds lucid and fresh’.

Benny has supplied his top five musical influences:

1. Keith Jarrett

Jarrett is the reason I started playing piano. He is the pianist of the century for me. Period.

2. Miles Davis

Miles has got to be the bravest musician of his time; he never looked back and always found a way to make his music accessible to younger audiences without compromising his artistry.

3. Chopin

Chopin created some of the most beautiful harmonies and melodies; he inspired many of my songs.

4. Radiohead

Radiohead is my favourite, mainstream band today. Their ambient sound is always unique and mysterious. It’s hard to do that in popular music.

5. Jimmi Hendrix

Jimmi’s raw energy is what drives his band. I get a lot from him and we even play some of his tunes in the Trio.

The Benny Lackner Trio join The Chris Poulsen Trio at the New Globe Theatre on Sunday 26th October.
