Tom Ballard is celebrating his 24th birthday the same way that most of us do — by leaving his job as host of triple j's breakfast shift.
Incredibly, Ballard has been with the station for seven years. He began broadcasting there when he was just 17, took over the breakfast gig at 20, and scored an ARIA nomination for his compilation CD, 'Tom & Alex: The Bits We're Least Ashamed Of'. So, you know, usual 24-year-old stuff.
Tom posted a goodbye message on his blog:
"For the past seven years I've been paid to wake up with one of my best friends in the whole world, talk shit, wear zentai suits, laugh at my dad, drink instant coffee and play good music. It's been the sweetest of gigs, but I feel like now's the right time for me to try new things. This will give me an opportunity to focus on my real passions: standup comedy and not getting up at 4am."
Tom's final show will be broadcast live from The Metro (Sydney) on Friday December 13, with some surprise guests and a live recording of Like A Version.
But what of Alex Dyson? Rest assured, Ballard's trusty co-host will continue to hold down the fort in 2014, with his co-host set to be announced on air on December 3.
