Tkay Maidza: Being Silly On Stage

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With sold out shows in Sydney, Adelaide and Hobart, Tkay Maidza continues to add new shows to her national tour, which now stands at 15 dates.

“It's pretty surreal and unexpected. It weird because it feels like [the shows] are my birthdays but then I'd have like 15 of them cause there are 15 shows. I'm so lucky, and it's really cool,” says the 'Brontosaurus' rapper.

Special guests on the menu for the tour are Willow Beats and Porsches. “Willow Beats are a guy and a girl who do electronic music that is really cool, it's really airy and free-falling, I love their music! And Porsches are friends with Joy, who I've toured with on my last tour, and they co-write a lot of cool songs. Now they've started their own thing,” Tkay says.

As an extra treat, Tkay will invite DJs from each state to join her shows when she comes to visit. “I’m inviting my friends to DJ and in Melbourne it's gonna be Swick and Lewis Cancut, who I work with all the time and they’re like my best friends.”

When asked what will go down at her shows, Tkay laughs. “A lot of fun, it's a dance party I guess. That’s the whole vibe, I think. It’s just me being silly on-stage while inviting everyone else to be silly and just join in. You know, I'm pretty random,” she says.

Tkay is not only being recognised for her sick tunes and random stage performances but also for her fashion sense, and right now she has a new hang-up. “I think I'm just going to wear jumpsuits, like space suits, from now on. It’s my new favourite thing to wear,” she says.

Which ties in well with her new, spacey-cartoon music video for 'M.O.B.'. “The whole clip is like an anti-Tkay trying to catch the good Tkay. So the bad me trying to find the good me and stop me kind of thing. I want to get to that point where I'm happy, and the video is like a pursuit of happiness I guess.”

Between chasing happiness, touring, releasing singles and music videos, Tkay is also keeping busy with her festival shows. “Being booked for the festivals that I've been booked for has been the most surreal thing, 'cause you know, I remember saying to myself before I started playing at festivals that I had never actually been to many festivals.

“I think I went to Big Day Out and I hated it 'cause I was in the crowd and I had a general admissions pass and I was like, 'this is horrible, I’m never coming to a festival unless I’m playing it'. From then on every other festival that I've actually gone to, I've played at. It’s been really cool that that’s happened, playing Splendour twice and playing there a couple of weeks ago was amazing,” Tkay says.
