Brisbane indie pop singer, Tiarne's new single is titled 'Lights'.
Senior Writer.
A seasoned all-rounder music writer and storyteller with a specialised interest in the history of rock.

Brisbane indie-pop singer-songwriter Tiarne composes music punctuated by captivating vocals and sentimental storytelling that is striking an emotional chord with listeners.

Her nostalgia-invoking 2017 debut single 'Kids' put Tiarne on the tongues of music fans and industry tastemakers, with her first EP 'Bloom' making her a highly-anticipated emerging artist.

Originally form the Gold Coast and now an entrenched Brisbanite, Tiarne launches her new single 'Lights' at Black Bear Lodge at the end of October, a tune that touches on her experiences leaving behind family and friends to embrace life in a new city.

You're launching a new single 'Lights' in mid-October; tell us about the song and how it follows on from your 'Bloom' EP?
'Bloom' was a reflection for me, revisiting memories from my past and getting a few things off my chest. 'Lights' is about my journey as an adult and the excitement of moving to a new city and leaving the past behind.

How have you evolved as an artist and songwriter since 'Bloom'?
I've been experimenting with new sounds and concepts that people can dance to. I was inspired by Lorde's track 'Green Light'. I love music that simultaneously stirs emotions and makes you dance.

You've said 'Lights' is a new musical chapter for you; what else does this new chapter hold?
At this stage, I'm still finding myself as a musician; as an artist you're forever changing. 'Lights' is the perfect transition into the next chapter along with a few other songs I’m excited to share.

I'm still writing and reworking other pieces. But for me, 'Lights' is a confirmation of new beginnings.

Moving from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, what do you miss most about home?
I miss the beach! It’s easy to take it for granted when you've lived near it your whole life. I am lucky my family still live there, so I can visit whenever I like.

In general though, I miss the life I had there. Things change as you get older and going back now, it’s just different. I do love going back to the [Gold] Coast and just relaxing and spending time with family and friends though.

On the other side of that, is there anything about Brisbane you couldn't live without now?
Oh my gosh, the list never ends! Brisbane has its own uniqueness. I can't put my finger on it. When you're driving over the Bridge into the city, it’s so magical.

It’s all the little things I love like brekkie in West End, gigs in the Valley, the sunsets over the suburban hills and the inner city Uber Eats options.

How are you feeling about launching 'Lights' at Black Bear Lodge at the end of October?
I am so excited, I love Black Bear Lodge. This will be our first show with the band since April, so we are really keen to get back on stage.

What do you have planned for that performance?
We have a couple of new elements onstage. This time I’m not playing a whole lot of guitar because I feel I can interact and energise the audience more when I’m just singing.

Do you remember the first song you wrote and what it was about?
Oh wow, I wish I could. I think the first song I wrote was in Year 4, but I can't remember what it was about. I used to sing songs on my trampoline when I was a kid and pretend it was a stage, but I never wrote them down.

Are you planning on another body of work soon, perhaps a full-length album?
I am working towards an album in the future. No release is scheduled anytime soon, but I’ve set a goal to finish the album in the next 12 months.

I've got a couple of collaborations in the works and am really keen to keep co-writing with other artists.

Any plans for more live shows?
We're actually playing Treehouse On Belongil 13 December. We'll be filling 2019 with a bunch of shows too. Stay tuned.

After 'Lights' what's next for you?
At this stage, I'm just taking it one step at a time while I write towards an album. I have a special song I'll be releasing in the new year and an exciting collaboration coming out soon. 2019 is going to be busy and I am so excited for what’s to come.

Tiarne launches 'Lights' at Black Bear Lodge (Brisbane) 31 October. She also plays Treehouse On Belongil (Byron Bay) 13 December.
