Young Brisbane singer-songwriter Tiarne has created a ripple within the local music scene since her debut release, 'Kids', in March.
A finalist at Brisbane's QUBE Effect (where she filmed her first video clip) and added to the Red Deer Music and Arts Festival line-up in October, Tiarne is poised to maintain the momentum she has built so far in 2017.
You are about to release your second single, 'Golden', ever… just a little excited/ pumped re: sharing new music with the rest of the world?
It's so exciting to finally get my sound out there. It's really lovely hearing everyone's unique responses to how my music makes them feel and how they relate to it.
Tell us a bit about 'Golden'… how does this song showcase your sound/ style?
'Golden' is the song I've always wanted to write. I am such a sucker for that dreamy clean, guitar tone and bass-heavy percussion, so blending those elements really brought a vision to life for me. The lyrics really speak to me too. It focuses a lot on my personal, music journey.
You're also working on a debut EP due for release in October… how is work proceeding on that project?
I sure am. It's almost done; just about to get the last songs mixed and mastered. These new songs really complement my current releases.
Electronic pop has become the new 'it' genre at the moment… do you see that as a positive for your own music?
It's funny because I've always been drawn to this style as a listener, but never thought I'd end up being this style. It's a real positive because it means I can get important messages and social issues across to the pop audience through my lyrics while appealing to their musical style and preference.
How was the experience of participating at the Brisbane QUBE Effect?
QUBE Effect was such a great experience. I was able to meet some lovely musicians and support some very talented friends of mine. It felt really good to represent my city through music.
Part of that QUBE experience was recording your first video… how much did you learn from that process, and how fun was it to record and participate in your first video?
It was so much fun. Of course I was naturally super-nervous, but the whole team behind the production were so genuine and easy to work with, which made me feel much more comfortable about the whole 'live' recording nerves. Made me realise that being surrounded by a support team can make the world of difference in those intense moments.
You'll be launching 'Golden' with a Brisbane show at The Flying Cock; you must be looking forward to this event immensely?
I am so excited. I'm keen to finally showcase my music with my awesome band and to have a lil' boogie with everyone haha. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be working alongside some amazing people.
You'll also be playing Red Deer Music Festival in October… pumped to be on the bill?
This has been such a highlight and it hasn't even happened yet. To be on the same line-up as one my influences, The Preatures, feels like a real career defining moment for me. Especially in these early stages. I'm pumped to meet new people and show off the hard work my band and I have been putting in.
I'm assuming this will be your festival debut… a little nervous?
I have done a few busking type, festival gigs but none with my band; debuting myself as 'Tiarne' so yes, the pressure is definitely on.
Will you plan anything extra special for your performance at Red Deer? And will you camp onsite or arrange a helicopter to ferry you in?
Hahaha! Look, being a sober Sally I'll probably drive us home later in the night when the band is begging for a Maccas run.
You've received airplay on local Brisbane ABC radio and slew of community radio stations… have you been blown away by people's responses to your music?
It's been so heartwarming hearing different reactions. 'Kids' really struck a chord with a wide audience, especially the music video. It was nice to speak for the kids and adults who have been through that similar experience of family separation. It's definitely a topic that I'm passionate about and hold close.
For someone so fresh into their career, how much have you learned so far?
I have to say it's really helped that I've done a degree in music in terms of all the organisation that goes into releasing your own music. One thing I have learned is how important it is to have confidence and put yourself out there. While your music is the most important thing, knowing how to handle your business is also vital.
The next six months for you… what do you have planned/ hope to achieve?
I would love to do a tour. That's for sure, the next step. Right now I am writing towards a new EP, so perhaps a new single.
The Brisbane music scene; have you found other artists welcoming of a relative newbie to the stage?
I adore the Brisbane music scene. I'm so grateful be among it and I'm lucky to have so many close friends within the scene who continuously inspire me to push myself further.
