Tia Gostelow Loves Collaborating With Other Artists

Tia Gostelow is on tour May-June.
Anna Rose loves hard rock and heavy metal, but particularly enjoys writing about and advocates for Aboriginal artists. She enjoys an ice-cold Diet Coke and is allergic to the word 'fabulous’.

Despite all that she has achieved, Tia Gostelow still retains an endearing tone of innocence.

Performing with the likes of The Rubens and Gomez as well as releasing her debut album ‘Thick Skin’ last year, the singer-songwriter is – even now in her relative youth at only 19 years old – experiencing the world in a pursuit of passion that most will only ever dream of.

Naturally, Tia has a youthful energy driving her but she has an overwhelming abundance of creative energy too that stems, she says, from a love of her craft. “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else,” she says.

“It’s a pretty cool career to have and the travel between cities and countries, I love doing it, so it doesn’t feel like a job, I guess.”

When she returns from an extensive European tour throughout May, Tia will perform at the concert series The Sound Society; a series of semi-regular, free, outdoor concerts staged throughout the year at South Bank (in Brisbane).

Tia says she’s unsure of what to expect in terms of differences between this opportunity and festival or venue shows. “This is probably my first show in Brisbane that hasn’t been a venue show,” she says. “I’m used to playing in venues and festivals and stuff, and I’m super excited for it. It’ll be so different to what I’ve done before and it’ll be exciting to play to a new crowd.”

With new crowds come new opportunities, but Tia won’t be test-running any new material just yet. “I’ve just come out of a two-week writing spree, but I think I’m still in a stage where I’m still playing these album songs and they still have a little life left in them.”

Different audiences require different things and Tia feels there’s still a lot more in ‘Thick Skin’ to be understood differently by different people. “My album hasn’t even been out for a year yet and I think there’s definitely a lot of people who haven’t heard these songs and will hear them for the first time.

“I think that’s what I mean when I say there’s still life left in them. I still love playing them and that’s a good thing!”

After June, Tia would have executed a pretty full schedule of performing, and likely much more that isn’t on the itinerary – but the year is still young and Tia has a lot more she wants to achieve. “[After] that two-week songwriting [spree], I’m starting to get my next album on the way.

“I want to spend some time making this next record [into] something I absolutely love. It’s like a piece of artwork more than anything.

“If I get cool festivals and shows along the way, then that’s pretty cool as well – but this year already looks pretty hectic! So I’m just excited to see what comes.”

The songwriting experience is for Tia, as much an opportunity for learning and creative collaboration as it to experience more wonderful things. “It’s probably where I feel like I learn the most and it’s making those connections with people.

“I love co-writing with people, it’s probably one of my favourite things to do. The whole experience is great – you’re sitting there with like-minded people and they have different strengths to you and you’re learning so much from them. It’s been a great thing.”

Tia Gostelow joins Karrie Hayward and The Beamish Brothers at The Sound Society (Brisbane) 1 June.
