Thundamentals @ The Zoo Review

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A sell-out crowd packed The Zoo for a long, satisfying night of Aussie hip hop.

Brisbane emcee and Hilltop Hoods Initiative winner I AM D entertained early comers with gritty beats and clever rhymes. Cairns duo Fozzey and VanC mixed rap with pop and dance stylings on insanely catchy tracks, like their single ‘Gimme Love’, and treated the crowd to an amusing beatbox-backed rhyme about video games and weed.

Astronomy Class, fronted by Ozi Batla of The Herd fame, combined fan favourites like ‘Where You At?’ with songs from their Cambodian-inspired album ‘Mekong Delta Sunrise’, featuring choruses performed by Cambodian singer Srey Channthy.

By the time Thundamentals took to the stage, The Zoo was pretty much at capacity, showing just how popular this Blue Mountains hip hop group has become.

For the next hour, DJ Morgs and MCs Tuka and Jeswon entertained the hell out of the crowd with a high energy mix of tracks, including a fair few from their latest release, ‘So We Can Remember’.

It’s hard to dislike a band that says “to all the haters out there… we love you!” and then performs a song with the unforgettable lyric ‘the only beef I got’s in noodle soup’. Indeed, their good-natured brand of rap seemed to have no beef with anyone, except the horrible boss that inspired ‘Quit Your Job’.

There was an interesting mix of fun tracks and more serious sombre material like ‘The Groundhog Song’, and the night ended on a high note with the hits ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ and ‘Something I Said’.
