The Vanns Studio Diary – The Making Of 'Last Of Your Kind' Album

The Vanns are an indie-rock band from Australia.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A week out from the release of their new studio album 'Last Of Your Kind' and east-coast tour, indie chargers The Vanns have shared a photo dump with scenestr from the recording sessions.

With The Music Farm's (Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel) Chris Collins (Skegss, Middle Kids) taking the lead on production, the band continue to foster an expansive indie-rock tone that's not out of place alongside the likes of Gang of Youths, The National, Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene.

"The idea behind 'Last Of Your Kind' and a message throughout the album is living the most fruitful and spontaneous life you possibly can," The Vanns says.

"In saying that, there is also no hiding the fact that we can all hit rock bottom, but you will always make it out the other side.

"Drop all the walls of questioning what other people may think about you. Embrace being different, embrace being weird and embrace being you, there will never be another. . . so make YOU the best f...ing version you can."

The recording process for 'Last Of Your Kind' has also reinforced the band's shared love of each other and desire to push the boundaries of what they can achieve with The Vanns.

"The four of us have all been through a whirlwind of change in the last couple of years in the making of this record, but we have never been closer as mates.

"The recording process was a pretty surreal experience, most of the tracks are nearly all recorded live with us four in a room and some even entirely (vocals and everything).

"We had our good mate Chris Collins producing this record and it was so tight-knit with him, he really got the best out of us being a live band and honing that live energy. So cheers to album number two and many more to come."

Diary Pic One

Above is a pic of Cam (Cameron Little, guitar), Bano (Andrew Banovich, drums), and Switty (Tom Switlek, bass) during a writing session at our studio. This pic was taken pre-album recording and we are most likely talking about either a part of one of the tracks off the album, or who should go grab some beers.

Diary Pic Two

Above is a pic of The Music Farm, a beautiful recording studio and even nicer landscape up in the hills just west of Byron Bay. It's nice to have the luxury of escaping the studio every now and then to just take in the serenity. Truly one of the nicest areas in Australia.

Diary Pic Three

For an album recording process, it's essential you stock up on your fluids. Who knows how long you'll be stuck in there strumming and banging. Nothing like cracking a cold one and listening to your own songs a thousand times.

Diary Pic Four

Cam laying down some sort of keys/ organ/ synth parts whilst Switty and Andrew listen. Meanwhile producer Chris Collins presses the record button and is now admiring Cam's Les Paul. Pic by James Vann (vocals, guitar).

Diary Pic Five

This photo was taken after finishing all 12 tracks on the album. We came up with an idea to record the film camera's last photo of the film roll and possibly chuck it somewhere in the album.

We then decided to put it at the very end of the last song 'Collide' and after a short stint in mixing land, we collectively agreed to ditch it. Everyone has bad ideas!

'Last Of Your Kind' is released 19 May.
