Sunnyboys @ The Triffid Review

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

So the night of time-travelling back to my early 20s to re-visit a band I still love to this day, The Sunnyboys had arrived.

I was having a laugh with my mate Damo on the walk to The Triffid that the old-folks homes around Brisbane would be quiet for the carers tonight as the oldies dusted off the glad rags and slipped out the window for a night on the tiles.

The Riptides indeed fitted the bill for my opening lines as the crowd was indeed made up of the chequered shirt and fancy-frock crew looking to get down and boogie to some RSL surf-rock. They were tight and ripped through the hits so appetites were appeased.

My friend and I made our way to the front getting the usual ‘you're-to-tall’ sooking and got ready for some classics. The Sunnyboys strode out to much love and eased into the set rather than belting out a classic hit and it was sublime.

These boys were a well-oiled machine and the joy of playing together permeated through the crowd. I am reminded why I loved these guys when younger as they ripped through the hits like ‘Happy Man’, ‘Trouble In My Brain’, ‘Show Me Some Discipline’, ‘You Need A Friend’ and more.

It was hot and sweaty and fantastic as Jeremy Oxley shredded his way through the list with the most sublime guitar sound.

The sound was superb and after two encores ending with ‘Alone With You’, they left me and my friends with massive smiles feeling totally satisfied.
