The Strums vs Cafeine: Answering Each Other

Cafeine
National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

Rock & roll is truly a small world and The Strums (Brisbane) and Cafeine (Montreal) are heading your way in July to prove it.

We asked each act to interview the other; here are the results.

Cafeine answers The Strums questions

Who is your favourite band from Australia?
The Saints, but Men At Work are one of my childhood music favourites.

If you wanted to show us a great rock night out in Montreal, where we go and who would we see?
We would go to Esco Bar to see a local act live, then go dancing at La Rockette with hot girls and cool boys. We would end the night on St-Laurent Street and eat a poutine, a local Quebec dish with fries, cheese and brown sauce. Most likely you will be coming home with someone to love for the night.

Do Canadians like Nickelback?
In the prairies, Alberta yes. In the rest of Canada people with absolutely no education love Nickelback, but I've never met anyone who actually likes that kind of sexist rock.

What’s your favourite Australian beer?
I've never had an Australian beer but I am counting on you to introduce me to your best brews.

What is your best memory from on the road back home?
Swimming with the seals in the Madeleine Islands! Amazing.

If you could get up close and personal with one native Australian animal, what would it be?
I think a koala would be a nice animal to get up close and personal with. Kangaroos are pretty awesome too.

What’s the most serious on-stage injury you guys have had?
I fell off stage and scraped my shinbone pretty hard. I also got electrocuted while singing and fell on the floor unconscious. I woke up to girls screaming over me — they thought I was dead.

What is your favourite city to play in Australia and why?
All of Australia is bloody awesome but I must say Newcastle tends to be our favourite city, the people there are just so welcoming and into rock & roll music. feels like a second home!

I would like to surf. Do you guys like to surf? Could you teach me?
Jai loves surfing! It'll be mid-winter during the tour but it's never too cold! I'm sure we could teach you a thing or two.

What’s your favourite era in rock music?
Late ‘70s to the late ‘80s! That's when Aussie rock was in its prime.

I’ve loved Men At Work since I was seven years old Do you like any ‘80s Canadian bands or singers? Nickelback is not a permissible answer.
Damn! Nickelback are the first band that came to mind. Rush would have to be the choice of ‘80s Canadian rock — Geddy Lee is such a mad bass player!

I heard that you can die from a spider bite in the land down under. How often do people die because of insects?
Spiders, snakes, girls, they're all deadly down under! You don't hear about too many deaths from spiders though, as they usually get people out in the bush so the bodies are never really recovered. Make sure you check under the toilet seat before doing your business!

Do you guys like the beach? Will we have time to relax between the gigs?
We love the beach and of course there will be!

Is it ok if my favourite rugby team is New Zealand’s All Blacks? Will I get killed if I wear their jersey onstage?
We aren't great fans of the All Blacks unless they're playing England or South Africa! You should be right wearing a jersey unless it's around the time of the Bledisloe Cup!
