After four years of hard gigging, The Stone Fox boys are finally poised to take the stage as a headline act.
The self-proclaimed “stoner rockin' punkabilly” act has rocked The Zoo's stage once before, making a name for themselves at one the venue's Showcase events. Now they're coming back for seconds, but this time they've been given the honour of headlining their own show.
The lads have had a longtime wish of theirs granted, and it looks like they're not the only ones excited. “Ticket sales have been going great, we're looking at a minimum of 200 pre-sales,” beams the band's vocalist Ben. “It's gonna be a big night, a massive rock & roll showcase. We're gonna play a big set, an hour plus. It's pretty much The Stone Fox's ‘best of' catalogue.”
For the uninitiated, you can expect to hear various influences in The Stone Fox's sound, ranging from punkabilly to “straight up rock & roll”, with hints of many other genres in between.
Their lyrics are just as diverse, dealing with themes like everyday issues, spirituality, and animals – hence their name. “We just listen to a lot of music, that's just always been the way,” Ben says, chalking up the band's diversity to their personal listening habits. “There's tons of different types of music we listen to. A few of the boys love their punk and ska, we love stoner rock, hillbilly music, dark country. We don't limit ourselves to one sort of music all the time. We're music fans before we're musicians.”
The Stone Fox has even been known to pack a few mellow ballads, like their first single, 'Black And White'. “We like to confuse people sometimes,” jokes Ben, adding, “I think a lot of people really do appreciate the ballads just as much as the high tempo stuff.”
Unsurprisingly, support acts Dead End Kings and We Become Ghosts were chosen for the variety they'd bring to the show – they're metal and grunge, respectively. “We didn't want to be genre specific,” Ben explains. “We just wanted to put on a badass show with bands that we know are gonna rock up and bring it. We can't wait, it's gonna be great.”
The Stone Fox play The Zoo May 10.
