The Siren Tower: A River Runs Through It

The Siren Tower
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With their dynamic new set list, Perth folk rockers The Siren Tower are preparing to play on stages throughout Australia.

They'll be showcasing their new single, 'King River', lifted from their 2012 album, A History Of Houses. Propelled by symbolism, the clip for 'King River' complements its heartfelt lyrics. "It was one of the first songs we ever wrote before we even had a band put together and it was one of the last songs we finished for the album," drummer Brody Simpson says.

"It's all about symbolism. The song is all about returning to places where you feel safe, where you've always got some place to go back to when everything else is getting a bit hectic — and that's sort of what the clip is based around."

Drawing influences from classic Australian musicians, the band's sound is deeply earthed in Australian culture. "We try to do a fairly Australian thing," Brody says, "much like bands that came out of the '80s. They had a very distinctive Australian sound and that sort of vibe has been a big influence on us.

"In terms of song writing, our lyrics are very narrative driven and very descriptive. They're quite literal narratives — something that people can grab hold of."

He thinks the band, with its five members, has a lot of "room to move" instrumentally. "The songs are meant to pull at the heart strings occasionally, and they're also meant to give you a bit of a punch in the face and kick up and be a bit bombastic. I like music that's got a lot of dynamic; music that really pulls you in and can shock you. That's what we try to do — have a really varied scope of what we're writing and what instruments we're using."

Reflecting back on previous projects, Brody says The Siren Tower has meant a lot to him. "I often wonder, it would be lovely to go into hypnosis one day and have a listen to your own songs and, without knowing that you had a part in them, see how much you love them. I kind of get the feeling from this band that I'd be into it."
