Kim Moyes is an affable man. He’s relaxed, talkative and upbeat about all things Presets.
About to kick off their national tour, Kim is looking forward to showcasing material from their latest release, Pacifica. “We definitely tried to put a show together this time that was different to the last tour,” he says. “We've got new material, so that’s a big difference. We've got a different lighting show and a video component, we’ve taken some of the old songs and reworked them, extended intros, and made a few surprises for everybody, so there's quite a bit of difference.”
Not only has their show evolved over recent years, but so has their sound. “We always see the show we put together as a 'show'. We're putting together an experience, how we fill that up is really fun for us. We put together different arrangements, because we can.”
Both Kim and musical partner Julian Hamilton come from conservatorium backgrounds, an education that allows them to explore the electronic sprectrum in greater detail.
“Once we'd finished our degrees at university, we thought, ‘well, what’s the next step?’ and we got into production and computers and stuff. Even when we were getting into electronic music and production, we were still applying all the things we learnt at the conservatorium about melody and rhythm and harmony and structure. It’s kind of intrinsically part of who we are. I don't know what we'd be like without it. Probably pretty boring,” he laughs.
With sold out shows across the country, and new dates announced to meet demand, fans can expect a different breed of The Presets during this tour. “We have a festival set that’s no messing around, just attention grabbing music,” Kim explains. “[But] with our club shows, we can go a bit sideways and take the crowd with us a little bit more.”
And that’s surely what The Presets will do, as Kim adds confidently: “Come and see us, you're guaranteed to see a band that is going to put on a really good show.”
The Presets kick off their national tour tonight, joined by Parachute Youth and Light Year at all shows except Darwin and Townsville.
