In the world of electronic music, Opiuo needs no introduction. The producer from NZ has amassed an incredible resume of soundscapes that have taken him all over the world.
With a renowned live show, Opiuo is upping the ante by touring with a live band that will bring his electronic manipulations to life.
The Opiuo Band… who is with you on stage for this tour?
Five amazing musicians. Some of who are my closest friends, and will be travelling the world with me as The Opiuo Band. I won't go into detail about exactly what makes up the band just yet, as I want to maintain a surprise, but rest assured it will be extremely live with instruments, synths, vocals; all very tight. Honestly this is the most exciting show I've ever had the pleasure of being a part of.
When it comes to planning the live show, do you approach it differently to your solo performances?
I definitely do in some ways and I don't in others. On the one hand I have pulled my music apart entirely, giving us the freedom to take it in new directions, completely on the spot, and adapt as we jam and loose ourselves on stage. But on the other hand I like to maintain the elements of a flowing DJ set, as I love shows where the music rolls constantly, allowing you to get lost in the experience on the dancefloor. Music is fucking powerful when presented right.
What's the best aspect of having other musicians on stage with you?
The ability to explore the music, to turn songs into something completely new on the spot and different every show. All the musicians in the band are at the top of their game, I trust them to nail their role, and it's with this confidence I feel we are all able to take the music to the next level.
With this run of shows, what can punters expect from the band? Will it be a marathon of glitch-hop heaven?
It's going to be a true, musical journey. We're packing well over 20 songs into the set. Some old favourites, and many never heard before, brand new bangers. It's about maintaining what Opiuo is to me, and what I think it is to the people that love it and have been with me over the years. While adding something special that takes it to another place, a place of live music, a place of risk where we have to be connected on stage and vibe together to make it work. It's an extremely exciting challenge and adventure I assure you.
With the depth and flavour that other musicians add, have you been able to explore your own music even more thoroughly?
Absolutely. So much more than I expected when I first decided to do this style of project actually. We all have input into what goes down, and that's something really important to me. It's explosive and never ending with what we can do. Already songs I never thought I'd truly enjoy again have been re-born and given new emotion and a new personality, which excites the hell out of me.
Have you begun work on your next artist album?
I've definitely been working on loads of new music. Right now I don't know what form it will end up taking. I never like to restrict myself early on in the creative process. So maybe it will be an album, maybe an EP, maybe a bunch of singles. Who knows. What I do know is, this is the most evolved and satisfying music I have been lucky to be a part of in my musical career yet.
Is there a normal day, Monday-to-Friday for Opiuo?
Not a chance. My weeks are all over the place. Depends on the time of year and what I'm up to. But generally when I am home each week involves making music, practicing with the band, riding my motor bike, kicking it with friends, and celebrating this thing called life in as many forms as possible.
You've been settled in Melbourne for nearly a decade, right? What does the city offer that you call it home?
In May it'll be ten, whole years! It's gone so fast I tell ya! Melbourne is such a diverse and exciting place. I'm constantly falling in love over and over again with its gritty charm. There's no limit to what you can do here. There's always multiple people and crews on the same tip, ready to share ideas or support your wildest, creative fantasy. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
Where is the best place for a coffee in Melbourne?
My house. Come on over!
Your popularity continues to grow; reviews always glow - how do you handle such a stream of positive energy?
To be honest I don't read too many reviews or forums, just so I don't get lost in some individuals personal opinions. It's easy for people to write what they want on the internet, whether it good or bad, with anonymous freedom from the comfort of their own home. If I spent to much time focusing on that I'd lose direction and confidence to be myself. Honestly though, it is incredibly humbling to know there's so much positivity coming my way. I guess it's about what you put out there that generally finds its way back to you. I do what I do, and I don't expect everyone to like it. I guess I've been lucky enough to find likeminded people along the way who enjoy music and life in a similar way I do. We're only here for a short time, so make the most of it. Respect each other, stay positive, and make a difference in any way you can.
Outside of Opiuo, do you have any other creative endeavours in the works?
I work alongside my really good friend Austero in a collaborative project called Sunmonx. We just released an EP on Interchill Records, 'In The Trees'. I also do a bunch of graphical work for myself and others. Plus collecting too much art, and trying to master the life-long skill of having fun.
Does it frustrate you that you can't play your own name in scrabble?
Rules are made to be broken! Let this be the first one of many. Opiuo is now a word. Word.
What are three things/ events/ people who have influenced you this year?
My Bonneville and the open road. My friends attitudes and their desire to take life by the balls. My View Master and the Cookie Monster Goes To The Park collection.
Last one; is it to early to talk about the CWC?
I'm proud of what NZ did. We may not have won the cup, but it's not always the winners that are looked upon as the true achievers of something great.
