The Necks: the greatest trio on earth is ducking out for an east coast run of dates in early 2019.
And no, an over-eager intern hasn't run amok with hyperbole: it was the the New York Times which awarded the exultant wreath to the maestros of jazz, experimental improv.
Before stepping on stage, nothing is planned or discussed between the trio. They walk on and they start playing. Chris Abrahams (piano), Lloyd Swanton (bass) and Tony Buck (drums) conjure mesmerising sonic landscapes that slowly evolve and unfold over hour-long sets.
The Aussie masters formed in 1987 and have never played the same set, or indeed the same track, twice; such is their unique jamming approach – not only to live performance but also their studio albums.
All 20 albums have received international critical acclaim, with two winning ARIA awards. Their 20th, 'Body', is being hailed as one of their best, with Pitchfork describing it as "as engrossing and powerful as anything the Necks have ever made" while Dusted Magazine offered "there's something new and intriguing to hear in every second."
Now celebrated worldwide, playing packed concerts everywhere from The Barbican in London to the Roulette in New York their most recent European tour (October 2018) included sell-out performances in London, Berlin and Paris as well as the Mondriaan Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, Forlì Open Music Festival in Italy and the Belgrade Jazz Festival in Serbia.
