Move over Flume, Brisbane has its very own wünderproducer.
Danny Harley has been making waves under The Kite String Tangle moniker since unveiling his electro project on SoundCloud last year. With cleverly textured vocals and gentle beats, Harley's efforts soon caught the attention of Triple J. Earlier this month, single 'Given The Chance' was released, complete with psychedelic video shot on location at Cocktaoo Island.
Originally part of Brisbane electro dance act Pigeon, Harley was pleasantly surprised with the reaction to his solo project. “It was all really bizarre,” he remembers. “It's the kind of stuff I've always done but I got a really good reaction and it kept growing. I don't really know what's going on but I won't argue!”
Harley bolstered his SoundCloud success with performances at last year's Falls Festival and has bagged a spot at SXSW in March. Next month sees The Kite String Tangle's biggest Australian tour to date, with additional dates added in Melbourne and Brisbane due to extra demand. “When I saw that the venues I'm playing are double the size of the last tour I did, I was kind of nervous! Seeing the ticket sales was incredible though, it's so flattering.”
The popularity of The Kite String Tangle is doubly impressive when considering he hasn't actually released an official record yet. Harley is already on it though. His debut EP is scheduled for a March release date, with further plans for a European tour this year too.
In the meantime, Harley's hometown audiences will have plenty to keep him occupied as he looks forward to bringing The Kite String Tangle back to Brisbane. “There's a cooler vibe in Brisbane because everyone has this pride about getting behind their city and supporting local music.
“It's just nicer, everyone is more supportive. It's probably a good time to be here too, there's a lot of cool acts coming out of the city. Brisbane has a pretty good scene for grunge and garage but electronic-live-pop stuff seems to be thriving now as well.”
