Birthdays are always cause for celebration. And The Jungle Giants Adelaide show at Fat Controller (31 August) was no exception to that rule.
The Jungle Giants entered the stage to be greeted by a massive applause and screams. The Brisbane band kicked off the night, in much the same fashion as they kicked off their career, with a bang. They came out swinging with ‘She’s A Riot’, one of their biggest hit singles since their first winner in 2011, ‘Mr Polite’.
Several other hits followed, many from their latest album ‘Quiet Ferocity’ including the song that lent its name to the album. Other hits, such as overwhelming crowd favourite ‘Bad Dream’ and the energetic jam that is appropriately titled ‘In the Garage’ went down all too well. Much like the four beers lead singer Sam managed to knock over in the space of the first two songs.
Halfway through the set another world famous song was performed. Only this time it was performed by the audience… “Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Cesira, happy birthday to you.”
The incredibly-inspired lyrics brought about a embarrassed smile and giggle from the woman of few words: lead guitarist Cesira Aitken.
The most recent Triple J favourite, ‘Feel The Way I Do’ closed out the night much to the delight of the jumping crowd. I can now safely inform you that hearing that tune on the radio does not compare to experiencing it live.
I was feeling it in the same way as all the other people in the room; bodies swaying and bouncing in unison to the point that moving for yourself wasn’t even necessary, with the two bounding people alongside you doing it for you.
Heading back to ground level and feeling the cool air was a much needed relief after such a cracker of a gig.
Thanks for the ace night, Jungle Giants. Happy 24th Cesira! Adelaide loves you all 24eva.
