The Inaugural Jazz By The Beach To Light Up Perth's Live Music Scene

Organised by Catherine Summers (pictured) Jazz By The Beach (Perth) takes place 14-15 August.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The inaugural Jazz By The Beach is set to bring a slice of New Orleans jazz to the streets of Perth's Scarborough for two days of world-class live music next month (14-15 August).

The idea of English-born, Perth-based performer Catherine Summers, Jazz By The Beach was created in part after the COVID pandemic brought about a swathe of cancellations last year.

"It is my hope that this beachfront event will attract all kinds of people from all surrounding suburbs and further afield to enjoy the New Orleans buzz with jazz spilling onto the streets," Catherine says.

"Big thanks go to The City of Stirling's Community Creativity Fund developed as part of the City of Stirling's Economic Stimulus and Community Recovery package in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I applied for and was awarded the grant to execute the creation, promotion and advertising of the festival."

A mix of ticketed and free events across eight venues, Jazz By The Beach will feature the likes of Ali Bodycoat, Russell Holmes, Lucky Oceans, Juliana Areias, Howie Morgan, Steven Hensby, Freddie Grigson, Holly Scott, and roving band Junkadelic – as well as Catherine and her five-piece band.

"I'm thrilled and honoured to perform alongside the fantastic talent we have in this first year and it's great to have such iconic beachfront, oceanview venues involved, such as The Sandbar, The Scarborough Beach Bar, Zoie, The Surf Life Saving Club and more all giving people both a world-class jazz music experience and a world-class ocean beachfront view."

Initially a one-day event, local interest and community spirit has turned Jazz By The Beach into a two-day weekend affair.

"After realising the excitement of each of the participating venues to host an event such as this, the project has become bigger and bigger turning a one day and four venue event into two days, eight venues and we now have eighteen acts over the two days; it's fantastic!" beams Catherine.
