Melbourne outfit The Getaway Plan break their hiatus with new LP, 'Dark Horses'.
A couple of years ago, The Getaway Plan looked pretty damn set. They had a great back catalogue, a more than dedicated fan base, and some deeply cool, music videos of children running amok and burning down castles in the depths of forests (YouTube 'The Reckoning'). Then, they went silent.
Now, after not releasing any new material for almost five years, they have returned with their latest offering 'Dark Horses', and a fresh new set of tour dates.
Frontman Matthew Wright squeezes in time to chat in between packing pre-orders of CDs. “Man, it comes out in two days and we're fucking wrecked,” he says.
“Because it's all independent we're just at home packing everyone's pre-orders, it's very DIY and it's a lot of work. After Friday we can kind of kick back and relax, though.”
The Getaway Plan have indeed decided to go fully independent, breaking away from their record label and recording and distributing the new record entirely by themselves. As part of this, they extended the offer to their listeners to help out via a Pledge campaign, something that was so successful they were able to cover recording costs with it. “It kind of creates a sort of pressure, a pressure that we're not used to,” Wright says.
“But it's the best kind of pressure, when you have pressure coming directly from your fans rather than a bunch of suits putting a bunch of money into you and expecting things out of you. These people just want a CD and they just want the best record you can give them, and that's what we've given them I think.”
Despite it being, in some ways, a record created with aid from the people, Wright still feels it satisfies him and the rest of the band in terms of personal creativity. “We're always going to put ourselves first and foremost, although the fans probably don't want to hear that when they're putting money into the record.”
