Blink and you’ll miss ‘em; hit up the Heathen Hoedown at The Bearded Lady to catch newcomers The Family Jordan.
The Family Jordan, a six-piece cult country band that’s barely a year old, is one of the best-kept secrets in Brisbane’s indie music scene. Formed in the summer of 2013 by long time mates and collaborators Jordan Rochfort and Sam Joseph, The Family Jordan have slowly been working their way up the Brisbane music circuit ever since.
Their music is inspired by the works of classic country rockers like Gene Clark and Hank Williams, with an emphasis on “desert” culture; primary songwriter Jordan Rochfort describes their lyrical content as akin to “the moment when you’re dying of thirst.”
“We’re looking to bring country music back,” Jordan says. “Good country, instead of all this top 40 country crap that we have these days.”
Even though the band has been doing the rounds in Brisbane for over a year now, you’d be hard-pressed to find any information on them online, further evidence of the band’s goal to keep things as low-key and grassroots as possible. However, curious readers can get a taste of their talent on Soundcloud, with an EP release in the works right now.
As for the band’s future, there will be a slight hiatus of about two months after the Heathen Hoedown while Sam travels to the States. Upon his return, the band plans to waste no time getting right back into it.
“About two months after The Bearded Lady, we’ll play some more shows and release the EP,” Jordan says. “And hopefully play some dates in Sydney and Melbourne.”
