Melbourne-based band The Cool Calm will re-release their most recent single 'Nothing For Nothing' in the lead-up to their Queenscliff Music Festival debut.

Though 'Nothing For Nothing' had a brief release earlier in the year, vocalist and guitarist for The Cool Calm Tane Walker says the track didn't meet the band's expectations.

“We weren't quite happy with the version we dropped, so we quickly went back and re-tweaked it and tried to re-release it,” Tane says.

“While that is out in the ether, we're going to drop the official version around Queenscliff [Music Festival] but it's not too dissimilar to the one people have heard anyway, but there will be a bit more of an official release behind that one in the coming weeks.”

Tane goes on to say that although the changes to the track are minimal, they were essential for him to feel confident about putting the new song out into the world. “There's a few lyrics and a couple of vocal takes I managed to redo,” he says.

“We ended up getting it remastered anyway, so I daresay no one will realise there's any difference to it but it's more for myself; I've got to live with it and it's going to be out there forever so I needed to make sure I was 100 per cent happy with it and now I am. While most people won't notice, I'll notice so it was pretty important for myself.”

'Nothing For Nothing' comes after The Cool Calm's debut singles 'Hand' and 'Moving Forward' last year, and Tane says the new single is a continuation of the songwriting style established on their first two tracks. “It's just an extension of what we do naturally,” he says.

“Those songs all do essentially write themselves on the guitar eventually; they start in a garage somewhere – in my bedroom, or whatever – and flesh themselves out naturally as a band, but it's still tipping the hat to a lot of the stuff we love and listen to and are referencing.”

The Cool Calm premiere 'Nothing For Nothing' version 2.0 at Queenscliff Music Festival this weekend, which will be the first time the band has played, or even attended, the iconic festival.

“It's taken us a couple of years to getting around to actually going as patrons let alone getting to play it, so this is going to be our first time and from everything we've heard it sounds like it's a really exciting, awesome festival,” Tane says.

“The bands on the bill are just amazing and we love a good camping festival. Our band love a good camp, we love a good beer and we love a chance to mingle and get around any bands we want to meet. I think that's where we do our best work – making pals wherever we go or at least trying to anyway.”

The Cool Calm perform at Queenscliff Music Festival (Victoria) 23-25 November.
