One of the all-time greatest funk-soul-R&B groups, Motown legends The Commodores finally return to Australia – more than three decades since they last visited down under.
With a catalogue of certified classics including 'Easy' (you'll probably know Faith No More's most excellent cover), 'Brick House', 'Nightshift' (the band's sole Grammy Award-winning song amongst nine nominations), 'Three Times A Lady', 'Lady (You Bring Me Up)', 'Sail On' and 'Still', The Commodores will headline concerts in Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle, Sydney and Perth – their first Australian shows since 1993 – this October.Active for close to 60 years with 75 million records sold, the legendary band – who launched the career of Lionel Richie who was their co-lead singer in the 1970s – first came to prominence after opening for The Jackson 5 in 1972.
The tour news arrives in the wake of long-time vocalist JD Nicholas' recent retirement from performing. "After several decades as one of the lead singers of The Commodores, JD Nicholas has retired," the band posted to their social media earlier this month. We wish him well and we are very grateful for his tremendous contribution to the group for so many years.
"Classic R&B veteran lead singer, Brent Carter has joined the group retaining the original sound of the Commodores with his beautiful voice, and professional, respectful approach to the group's extensive hit song catalog.
"Additionally, Cody and Colin Orange, the sensational sons of original founding Commodore Walter 'Clyde Brickhouse' Orange, have embraced and excelled in larger roles in the group over the past couple years, and will continue bringing their unique talents and Commodore's legacy to the stage.
"Together with Brent, the songs with the full harmonies are better than ever. Original founding Commodores band leader William 'I can play any instrument' King will continue into year 57 performing and overseeing the quality both on the road and in the studio."
Tickets on sale from 10am (local time) on 21 March.
