The California Lane CD & Record Fair

Glitter Records and California Lane are getting set to host their second CD & Record Fair, in the heart of Fortitude Valley, this May.

It’s a community-built, DIY music event, honouring Brisbane’s independent spirit and the rich musical history of the Valley. . . Set to bring together music lovers, collectors, and the local creative community for a full-day celebration of Brisbane’s cultural heritage.

There’ll be thousands of vinyl records, CDs, cassette tapes and rare formats to browse through and discover, from a carefully-curated group of vendors contributors to the revival of physical media. Participating vendors include Sacred Crates, Beat Market, Disc Space and more.

Australia’s longest-running independent radio station, 4ZZZ, will join the fair for the first time. With more than 150 t-shirt designs created across their 50-year history, 4ZZZ will bring a wide range of merch including shirts, tote bags, stickers, bottle openers, and appearances from their iconic banana mascots.

Plus, there’ll be a special guest talk from John Willsteed. John played bass with The Go-Betweens during the ’16 Lovers Lane’ era, has worked with Ed Kuepper and The Apartments, and continues to play in Halfway. Outside of music, John is an award-winning film and TV sound designer, and teaches at QUT where he studies Brisbane’s punk and post-punk history.

Historian and author Robert Allen, known for his work with the State Library Of Queensland and his extensive research into Brisbane’s cultural and social history, will lead four guided walking tours throughout the day which are set to explore legendary venues like The Zoo and Whisky-a-Go-Go, alongside independent spaces shaping the Valley.

When it comes to tunes, attendees can expect some vinyl-only sets curated by selectors deeply connected to the craft of collecting and sharing music. . . With a line-up including DJ Judy Jetson (4ZZZ) and a second to be announced shortly.

The California Lane CD & Record Fair is on in Fortitude Valley (Brisbane) 16 May.
