Who could have imagined that a band who sings about nothing but beards and facial hair could be so popular, let alone conjure up enough beard-based material to release four albums?

Not me, but then again, I’m clean shaven so what would I know? Nevertheless, it was ‘hair there and everywhere’ as a lively crowd packed The Tivoli (Friday July 4) for the launch of The Beards’ fourth album, aptly titled, ‘The Beard Album’.

Facial hair aficionados worked themselves into a hot lather as the band rocked out classics such as ‘I’m In The Mood…For Beards’ and ‘Beards Across Australia Unite’, as well as tracks from their latest album, including new single, ‘All The Bearded Ladies’.

Vocalist, Johann Beardraven was particularly impressed with Brisbane’s display of beard pride, saying that it was “the best bearded Brisbane audience we have ever seen”. While admittedly it did get samey and repetitive pretty quickly (apparently “I wouldn’t understand, it’s a beard thing”), that isn’t to say The Beards aren’t a great band with catchy songs and a killer stage presence; their performance and stagecraft was second-to-none and they could just have easily been rocking a stadium crowd.

Special mention should be made of support act Franky Walnut whose hilarious country/ folk musical-comedy take on Australian culture and politics had me in stitches. Now, if I could only grow a beard.
