Paul McCartney will fill in for Kurt Cobain and play with the surviving members of Nirvana during tonight's 12.12.12 concert.
The charity event, raising funds for victims of Superstorm Sandy, will see the former Beatle and Wing join drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear (who toured with Nirvana for the last six months of their career) on stage in New York.
McCartney readily agreed to Grohl's offer to "jam with some mates", but admitted: "I didn't really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time?'
"And somebody whispered to me: 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it."
Certainly, 12.12.12 would be a good day for an apocalypse, but the Mayans famously called it for December 21 — maybe we were meant to read the numbers from right to left?
The likes of Kanye West, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton will also play the all-star gig, but none of them will attract as much attention as the slightly rejigged Nirvana lineup.
Rumours have begun to circulate that Rolf Harris will also appear, playing a selection of Jeff Buckley tunes.
