After spending a large chunk of 2024 touring Australia as part of their 50 Not Out and 50 Not Out Reprise tours, The Angels are commencing their second half century with a run of shows celebrating new music from the band.
The pub-rock icons, who've been a mainstay of the Australian hard rock scene since the mid '70s, will celebrate their 2024 record 'Ninety Nine', their first studio album in a decade, with a run of shows (Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane) performing the record in full in April."We were blown away by the response we got when we played songs from the new record on the 50 Not Out tours," rhythm guitarist John Brewster says. "We really believe in this album and can't wait to play every song live.
"I haven't been this excited about anything we've done in the studio for many, many years," adds John. "I'm proud of everything this band has done, but we have what I call 'benchmark albums', particularly 'Face To Face', 'No Exit' and 'Dark Room'. This, to me, is a benchmark album."
2023 saw drummer Nick Norton take over lead vocal duties, after stalwart Dave Gleeson (Screaming Jets) stepped down from the role after a decade-plus fronting The Angels. The band have kept Norton's replacement in the family, with John's son and bassist Sam Brewster's brother, Tom Brewster now whacking the skins.
"The fans have really embraced Nick Norton out front, which means a lot to us," John says. "He's also an amazing lyricist, and he has a great 'character' voice, which is really important in The Angels."
"Nick is a freak musician," adds lead guitarist Rick Brewster. As well as his vocal prowess, Nick adds a third guitar to The Angels' famous wall of sound.
The Angels album showcase concerts will be a triple treat for Angels fans. The night will open with a support set from a couple of guys you might know: The Brewster Brothers. Then The Angels playing the complete 'Ninety Nine' album, followed by an extended encore featuring the band's classic hits.
"We've found a new energy," Sam Brewster says, "and I think you can hear that on this record."
